Question about 2006 Subaru Impreza

1 Answer

I have a 2006 WRX wagon. I am replacing the passenger side axle assembly because the inner boot tore off. The old axle popped out just fine. The new axle is NOT going in all the way. I have used a dead blow hammer to try to seat it. This axle has the split ring at the end of the splines to hold it in place. I took the split ring off to check for fitment and the axle will not seat , even without the split ring. The old axle slips in just fine without its split ring on. So how much force do I need to use to get the new axle on?

I just replaced the passenger side axle on my 1996 Chevy Corsica and after 30 min. Of driving the axle popped loose from transmission what have I done wrong

The passenger side axle shaft is the longer of the two. It is more prone to this problem since it is more unwieldy to handle. Chances are you did not get the axle shaft seated completely when you installed it. There is a snap ring on the spline that inserts into the transaxle and this ring must lock into its seat or the inner joint will vibrate loose and come out. It is fairly easy to seat it when installing, but care must be taken to avoid damage to the axle shaft. Once you insert the spline into the transaxle, press it firmly inward until you feel resistance. Then pull back on the axle shaft about 2 inches, but no more than that. You don't want to separate the inner boot or unseat the inner tri-pot bearings. Then, push the axle shaft forward quickly and firmly, much like a slide hammer. This will snap the shaft into the seat. You will feel it when it seats in. If once doesn't do it, repeat as necessary.

How to replace cv boot inner on left side 1994 ply acclaim

I wouldn't waste my time replacing a cv boot on a vehicle of that age. I would recommend replacing the entire axle assembly. You have to remove it anyway to get at the inner joint. Chances are the inner joint will be worn given the age of the vehicle and that way the replacement axle will have 2 new joints and boots along with a warranty

How do I replace my inner axle on the passenger side of my 2002 Dodge Ram 4x4 4.7L. I lent my truck out and the C clip let go of the CV axle. The intermediate axle spline is stripped and I need to change...

Lift and support front end on suitable jack stands preferably on frame. Remove right front cv axle, stub shaft, and seal. You will need to pull the right front brake caliper assembly loose and place to the side. Then remove bolts from shock and upper control arm and hub nut to do this. Next, remove axle lock actuator on passenger side of front axle. Place a drain pan underneath front diff cover and remove cover and drain axle. In the center of differential there will be an 8 mm head bolt holding spider gear cross-shaft. Remove bolt and cross-shaft only! Push inner axle in until clip clears inside of passenger spider gear. Set clip aside and push/pull axle shaft straight out to passenger side.

01' Mitsubishi Eclipse cv axle removal passenger side

The passenger side has a inner and outer shaft and you would remove the axle nut and shaft from spindle then the center bracket and bearing (two bolts against engine block), sliding out the axle assembling at that point, or jerking it out, careful not to pull on the cv axle end but rather the jack, or inner, shaft. After removal, separate the middle by hanging upside down and taking a hammer to it, striking the inner shaft while turning around. Dont hit the dust shield or seals. Install in reverse order. Quick tip: you may get around removing ball joint by only removing both strut bolts, and possibly tie rod end bolt.

The rubber cover on the left side axel is tore. I need to replace the joint I think. How do I do this?

You will need to remove the front wheel. Unbolt the caliper and move aside. Remove the rotor. Remove the axle nut. Unbolt the 3 hub/ bearing bolts and remove hub assembly. Pull the axle shaft out through the opening left by the hub bearing. Cut off the old boot and clamps. Hold axle shaft and tap joint and axle stub off of shaft with a hammer. Install new boot on shaft and reverse steps for assembly.

CV Axle removal and installation

The axle should be able to be removed by using a flat ended pry bar tool with a dull flat end. Or possibly a very large flat screw driver. Put the pry bar between the axle and transmission. With light pressure, the axle should pop out of the transmission. The axle just snaps into the transmission. There should be no need or cause to damage the seal because the seal is inset into the transmission. Just watch what you are doing. As far as replacing the seal, I do not know. I have not had to do that yet, and I have replaced both sides with new boots more than once.
