Don't think so. It sounds like the starter is mis-aligned and not engaging the flywheel. When the starter spins, the gear on the end is supposed to move out and engage the flywheel. Sometimes the springs are bad or there is too much friction on the spiral shaft, but if this is a new starter, more than likely it is mis-aligned.

IF the starter is engaging and the engine is not turning then it sounds like a poor electrical connection on either the heavy ground or heavy 12 wire. Usually you will see one of the following, either a clattering of the starter solenoid, or the starter will engage and just stop turning.

If it neither of these, there is one other case, the flywheel could be missing teeth and the starter has nothing to turn.

Check voltage at starter (small wire) then check starter contacts..remove starter and take it apart. If they look chewed up replaace them.

Had the same problem and found burned contacts in 97 Diesel.

I have a 1992 Nissan Serena. Diesel Automatic. Sometimes when I turn the ignition then engine screetches instead of turning over. Sounds like a clutch problem in a manual. It always starts eventually but i...

no...what you have there is a bad starter...the starter bendix is not kicking the wheel out to contact the flywheel and crank the motor...you simply need a new starter...do it sooner than later...eventually it wont start at all

When i try to start my 97 mazda 626 it clicks but won't turn over and other times it starts.. What's the problem?

It sounds like your starter motor is going out. More specifically the solenoid on your starter motor, and since the they are both connected these days unlike the older vehicles you like need to replace the whole starter motor. I hope this helps you out.

Try turning the motor by hand if it turns freely you still have starter problems, Make sure your battery is complete charged and all terminals are tight and clean.

I have a 97 Toyota Avalon XLS that won't start, had a new battery installed, still makes clicking sound when I try to start. After a few tries it may or may not start.

hi it does sound like the starter is stuck, there could be a way to free it and find out for sure if it is u/s, what you have to do is, locate starter on your vehicle, depending on its location you can try tapping it with a small hammer or a long bar of sorts, at the same time get someone to turn the ignition at the same time while you are tapping the starter, this should free the solenoid and then thestarter should work, if it does, turn the motor off, and try again and see if it works if it does your ok, if not then try the above again, if you have to do it every time you turn the motor off then you will need to replace your starter....hope this helps please vote thanks

I need instructions on how to put a new starter 97 jetta GLX

You may want to check some things out before actually replacing the starter.

Check the fuse in the fuse box and the relay.

There are two parts to the starter. One is the actual starter motor and the other in the starter solenoid. The solenoid moves the starter motor into place and engages it into the engine.

When you turn the key you should hear the solenoid click as it moves the starter. If you hear the click and the sound of the stater motor spinning it is just the solenoid. It can be replaced without replacing the starter motor.

If you hear the click and no sound of the starter motor trying to turn. It is the starter motor.

It check for power at the motor. Use a test light or voltage meter to see it is getting power when the key is turned.

If you are getting power you have a problem with the starter motor as you suspect already. The above may save you money.

To change the motor it is fairly simple to do. You remove the four bolts holding the motor in place, remove the electrical connections. Slide the motor out. Installation is the reverse of removal.

I am assuming you know where the starter is. On a diesel it is on the back of the engine. On a gas engine it is on the front side.

If you really want to get into it you can replace the brushes on the starter motor. Once out you open the starter and install new brushes it they appear warn and are not making contact.

If you need details I would go to the library and ask for the Bentley service manual. They will have one or can get one from another branch.

Hope this helps.

Starting problem in a '97 dodge ram diesel

Could be the solenoid on the starter. Next time it doesn't start, hit the starter with a hammer or other hard object, then try to start it. If it starts, replace the starter before it leaves you stranded

Starter motor or battery

sounds like you battery is going, under a load it dies. easy test... get a volt meter put pos probe on the pos side of battery and the neg on the neg, try to start the car, watch the volt meter, if it drops below 10volts and does not recover to 12 volts its no good. this is called a load test. a 12 v battery usually when fully charged is 12.4 volts. also if you dont have access or knowledge, go to the auto store with the battery and they ll do a load test free for you if you ask them. also it sounds like your starter solenoid is sticking, while starting the car have someone beat on the side of the starter with a hammer this will free up the solenoid if its frozen.. good luck
