At the end of the serpentine belt adjuster there is a 3/8 square drive insert for a ratchet

There are tons of ratchets around. A lot more detail would be helpful for the uninitiated among us.

After replacing old tension bar I cannot get the serpentine belt to go over the tension pulley!!

This happens on some systems. I assume that your belt is routed correctly, try making the final belt pulley something other than the tensioner pulley. Sometimes the water pump, sometimes some other pulley....

Installing a serpentine belt

there is a tensioner pulley on the motor. usually it will have a slot for a 3/8 ratchet to fit in it. put the ratchet in the slot and pull and it will release the tension on the belt then reverse for instalation.. the diagram for the belt should be found on the core support..

How do I asjust the serpentine belt on a 2005 ford freestar?

It should not require any adjustment. the right tension is provided by the idler pully. If you want to release the tension for serpentine removal or examination release the tension on the idler pulley in the rear of the motor, spin the nut in the center like you were tightening, and the pressure will be released from the serpentine belt. Reversely, the appropriate tension will be given using the same way when the strap is reinstalled.

To tight

You should have a serpentine belt. You will see a pulley that attaches to a bracket. This pulley is spring mounted so it keeps the proper tension on the belt at all times. You will need to use a 3/8 drive ratchet or breaker bar to insert in to the square slot to pull the tensioner pulley back to remove the belt.

Replacing serpentine belt, does the arm thats attached to the tension have to be removed?

To release the tension on the adjuster requires a wrench on the wheel bolt or there is a 3/8 square hole near the wheel that can take a 3/8 rachet.

Serpentine belt replacement

go to and click on the Part Locator & Interchange link on the left, enter your vehicle information, look down and click the camera icon next to the serpintine belt, this is a diagram of how to route it. These engines have a tensioner pulley, it has a 3/8" square drive hole in it to release the tension on the belt, I start at the crankshaft and loop around leaving the tensioner for last, hope this helps, let me know

Serpentine Belt on a 1999 Ford Escort ZX2

If you have a book picture your are screwed. You do have a tensioner but it is between air con and powersteering pullys. In front from under you can put 15mm wrenchopend with a nother for leverage pull center bolt down to release tension. simple.
