Driving habits...incorrect tire pressure...excessive weight in car...low oil/old oil. Many things affect mileage. My 2002 max needed a new O2 sensor. Once replaced the mileage improved slightly.

Thats the sensory I had changed.Oil,tires are ok. I use reg unleaded gas, should i use a better grade? Also I drive in D.When should or should idrive in overdrive?

  • hjr8581 Sep 07, 2010

As far as I know Nissan recommends premium fuel for that specific model/year. Will using regular drastically affect mileage? In all honesty I dont think it should. I use premium fuel and always have. I always drive in D as well. As far as I know overdrive allows the engine to run at lower rpms. As far as I know, if your driving in normal conditions, driving in D is all thats needed.

My car is showing p0340 camshaft sensorit was replaced and car still wont start, due to a faulty fuel gauge ran car out of gas also but fuel is on the rail, NO fire, thinking I lost timing, need help

code p 0340 refers to camshaft position(CMP) sensor A bank 1--circuit malfunction===causes wiring---CMP sensor ---ECM
because it denotes bank i ( bank closest to the fire wall) did you change the correct sensor
check for wiring and harness conditions ait it may run close to the manifold and be worn through or broken at places

2003 nissan maxima p0021 bank 2 cam timing 40 degrees advanced at idle

To review - - the intake valve solenoid valve controls the flow of oil thru the control valve to adjust valve timing.
The code means the computer "sees" the valve timing as out of range and/or not controllable.
Possible causes could be a defective or stuck solenoid valve, dirty oil causing a blockage, a faulty cam sensor or faulty crank sensor.
Other than changing the oil and filter, the components would need to be checked with a scanner that can look at live data.

CURIOUS IF YOU ARE REFFERING TO THE ECM UPDATE THEY OFFERED FOR FREE ? IT WILL REALLY MAKE YOU WONDER? CHECK YOUR MASS AIRFLOW SENSOR- IF YOU GET A DTC THAT STATES YOUR TOO LEAN TO SYS BANK 1 REPLACE- BE CAREFUL THOUGH THE MAF SENSOR CAN BE EXPENSIVE-ORILEYS SEEM TO BE THE CHEAPEST AND DO NOT BUY THE SENSOR WITH THE HOUSING. 419.00 VS. 180.00 ITS ONE CLIP AND I BELIEVE 2 SCREWS. VERY TRICKY CAR SO BE CAREFULL . ITS A VERY DETAILED PROCESS THAT HAS TO BE FOLLOWED SO IF YA ARENT WILLING TO RISK IT TAKE TO

It means that your engine is running lean - not getting enough fuel for the amount of air that the engine is receiving. Because your maxima is equipped with a V-6 engine, whatever the problem, it is affecting only bank #1. Bank #1 is always the side of the engine where cylinder #1 is located, or in your case, the left side of the engine as it is viewed while facing the crankshaft end of the engine.
(on a 4 cylinder engine, there is only one bank and it is always referred to as Bank #1)
There are several things that can cause a lean condition including vacuum leaks, a malfunctioning Evaporative Emissions system, a misfiring cylinder (due to bad plugs, bad injectors, or an intake or head gasket leak.), a malfunctioning Mass Airflow sensor (MAF) or Manifold Absolute Pressure sensor (MAP) or even a bad Oxygen sensor (O2s) (Nissan sometimes calls an O2s an "Air-Fuel Ratio Sensor") It is even possible for a leaking vacuum brake booster to cause a lean code.
If there are any other malfunction codes present, it may help to pinpiont the cause of the lean code. (Like a P0301 "cylinder#1 misfire detected", in which case, you would address the misfire code first.)
Certain problems, like a leaking brake booster or a bad MAF will usually set lean codes for BOTH banks.
If the P0171 is the ONLY code present, the most likely cause is a bad O2s, but I recommend some diagnostic testing to prove it before spending the mega-bucks that Nissan gets for their O2 sensors.

I have a 2006 Nissan Maxima and it is causing me problems. Check Engine light came on about three months ago but drove fine. No loss of mileage or anything. Did not pass smog do to a P2A00 code (O2 sensor...

i have a 2006 nissan maxima 6 spd. when i purchased it there was 89,500. i replaced the clutch disk, release bearing, pressure plate and added a brand new flywheel(from the nissan dealer). a few days afterwards, the check engine light came on with a P2A00 and a P0420. when replacing the clutch kit i had to remove the exhaust system. i thought that i did not correctly install the exhaust system. after many inspections, i did do a good job installing the exhaust system. at this point i replaced the upstream, bank one oxygen sensor(a pain in the rear). i pray for God to lead me to the problem. don't try this at home but i jacked the front of my car up and rested it on jack stands and chock the rear tire. i started the engine and got under the car under the engine. i heard an exhaust leak at the bottom of the bank one, rear catalytic converter. one that catalytic converter, it has a small heat shield tack welded at the bottom. after taking that heat shield off, i found that the two tack welds at the top of that heat shield had broken causing an exhaust leak. THANK THE LORD! after plugging those holes and drive my car normally for the next two days, the check engine light when off. problem solved!
