Question about 2002 GMC Envoy

2 Answers

I have a 2003 Envoy with a switch select 4x2/4x4 transmission. The transmission is jerking, slow to shift, and when in auto 4x4 mode, it is loud, rides rough, and feel like the suspension is loose. The engine performance has declined dramatically in the last year. Gas mileage has gone from an average town/road of 18+ to 15 and below. My driving patterns have not changed. When I accelerate from a stop, the radiator fan just roars. Also, when the air conditioner is on, the engine loses even more power. Going up a small hill, I have to really push it to get decent response. Vehicle has 113,000 miles on it; but I'm not ready to let it go. What do you think? Thanks.

Is the check engine light on? Does the vehicle seem like it's bucking and jerking under a load? I am suspecting a restricted or plugged catalytic converter. You can check for this with a vacuum guage. Connect to a vacuum hose and have someone inside the vehicle hold the brakes and put it in gear give it some gas and watch the guage. If the vacuum severely drops off then you can suspect a restriction in the converter. The more load that is on the vehicle such as ac on or in 4wd the worse it will feel. Any additional info you can provide would be most helpful. Note how much vacuum the guage has idling then what it has under a load.

If there is a grease fitting on the drive shaft slip yoke, then grease it. Else pull it out and pack it with a good grease. That's the cheapest easiest thing to try. Sometimes that can cause the problem you're describing but that's typically when you start and or stop moving in the vehicle, not just when it's put in gear.

If you get a vacuum leak on the transmission or lack of, it may not shift at all or make it shift slow. Service it completely every 40k

Hard shift when accelerating and slowing down

Check your transmission fluid level when the engine is running and the car is in 'park'. add extra appropriate fluid as necessary via the dipstick tube. When 'max' is reached I think you will notice a return to normal shift operation.

A transmission problem would not make the steering wheel vibrate. Have you ever had the Transfer Case fluid changed? This is required every 50K miles. A qualified transmission technician should evaluate your problem.

It seems as though the Transmission clutches are slipping if it's an automatic or the clutch is worn if it's a standard. If it's an automatic transmission check the Transmission oil it should be clean and no burnt smell. You will easily recognize burnt oil by it's nasty smell.

Transmission jerks

One possibility is that the speed sensor is going out. When that happens the computer gets bad information and thus makes bad decisions. When the car goes into 2nd all of the solenoids are actually off. That is so if there is some kind of problem the transmission gets no power, then it still has P, R, N, 2nd. It would be kind of weird, maybe, to see only the 1-2 shift being affected but I can't really think of anything else that could cause that kind of problem.
