great idea. but no luck. next option?

  • christina216 Sep 06, 2010

additional info: between the open and close buttons is a red light/ (green light?). It is flashing red, but stops when I push either the open or close buttons. Can't recall whether the green light comes on if you are pushing the correct button. but if you interrupt the process or don't allow the windows to finish up/down to end the process, then when you try to push the wrong button the red light flashes.

I would be checking for failed electrical items such as a separate fuse for the drive mechanism and the relay that controls the motor. Check your owner's manual to locate the correct fuse and relay or possibly the inside of the cover over the the fuse block; the key for each fused circuit should be found there.

I suspect that the operation of the top is limited according to speed. I don't know how it is sensed, it could be simply derived from the same source that is used for the speedometer display in which case that too would be malfunctioning.
But if it isn't, it may be sensing that your 'speed' is too great to allow the top to operate.
The flashing red light is surely a warning but it could be falsely warning of an obstruction in the mechanism, the mentioned 'speed' limitation, a limit switch or connector that has failed or even a failed motor.
At this point, I'm afraid you need someone to do some voltage and continuity checking on the circuit that controls the motor and motor direction.

    Good luck-

BMW Z4 convertible top opened and now wont close. Motor runs then stops. Latch is stuck and the emergency pull cord will not release. How do I get to the latch to free the top?

try a spray lubricant into the motor mechanism and grease any visable wire cables that run from/to motor ,not the electrical cables the bare wire winder cables, also grease/ lubricate any accessable pivot/hinge points , gently pull the cord and gently push the roof back and forth occasionally trying motor with a bit of patience this should get the roof moving , also look for anything that may be snagging the roof/mechanism as there is a pressure protection system to stop the roof being fully closed on say someones hand so preventing injury

How does a manual top work on a 1998 BMW 323 I??

I believe you do this in this order. Roll windows down, release the latch at the top of the windshield, raise the front of the top, release rear cover by pulling the latch near the rear seat, Pull up the back of the top and then pull up on the rear cover. The back of the top should now fit into the opening under the rear cover. Continue to fold the top into this space. Push down on the rear cover to lock (won't be able to open trunk if not engaged.) To raise it, release rear latch cover, open rear cover and pull top out of opening. Raise rear of top so you are able to now close the rear cover, set rear of top down on cover and then pull fron of top down and engage the fraont latch. Hoe that helps.

Why does the radiator fan come on when the cars not started, 325I bmw 2002

If it's after you've driven someplace, the car will do this on it's own. It's to bring the coolant down to a lower temperature...a lot of cars will do this. It's just to finish cooling the car down. just don't put your hand near the fan, it might go on suddenly..

E36 BMW convertible top operating it manually

Hey there, I have experienced the same problem. You need to reengage both motors if you have disengaged them pulling the lever undernearth the rear driverside seat. Make sure to put the black lever back under the seat to the position before pulling on it.

You should have the top in the down position before engaging the motors back in place.

To engage the motors: The motors are located under the carpet in the trunk on the driver side. There are two black clips you will need to remove in order to pull the carpet back. One of the motors is located near the taillight. This motor is responsible for the storage lid cover. The motor that is located further in the drunk is the motor for the fabric top to move up and down. Make sure to firmly press these motors back into place. They should not move.

Once you have engaged the motors, go into your car put the key into the ignition and have the convertible top button pressed up (meaning to close the top), move the key to the accessory positio and hold it for 10-12 seconds. You will finally see the trunk lid get pulled closed. The car will now attempt to completely close the lid. If your motors are working fine it will close. If your only intention is to get the lid to close on it's own it should be accomplished.

Good luck!

Convertible top won't go down on my 1998 bmw 323ic

Sounds like the sensor has faulted or the pump has become disengaged. Usually when the light is flashing it's a sensor. You can check for a pinched line or low fluid also. There is a manual lock overide procedure to get the windows up, it's in you owners manual.
Good luck...i hope this helps,

2001 BMW 325i - Key no longer unlocking doors.

if you have a bmw 325i 2001 model try this solution:
if you have one key , go on to the next step. if you have more than one key, like two or more than follow this procedure.

step one: unlock the doors with your key and get in and close the doors but do not lock them
step two: put your key into the ignition and turn it but not to start the engine, do this less than 5 seconds

step three: take the key out of the ignition and put it near the shifter. press and hold the unlock button while pressing the lock button 3 times. you have 30 seconds to do this. the doors should lock and unlock automatically signalling that it the key has been reprogrammed. if you have more than one key follow those steps for each one except for step one. remmember you have only 30 seconds for each key. that should help you.
