Sometimes the cap is marked #1. sometimes not, inoder to find # 1 you will need to pull the number one sparkplug and spin engine until compression pops out of plug hole, you will be tapping the key not holding it because you will pass it,then use a light or long thin screw driver and then continue to spin engine but this time quick taps until the piston reaches the top of the cylinder, note remove the coil wire so engine does not start, you can also spin the crank when your close with a socket, spin engine until the screw driver is up when you feel if start down go back a touch thats top dead center, remove the distributor cap and look at where the rotor is pointing, then match with the cap terminal thats # 1. hope this helps.

Put new distruber in my 1975 ford 351 m I can get

Backfiring through the carb is a timing problem. I would bring it back up to top dead center and reinstall the distributer. Also double check your firing order on your plug wires.

How to tune up 96 chevy corsica

You will need a 3/8" drive ratchet with a 5/8" spark plug socket. There is no distributor on these engines so you won't require a dist. cap. You will want to change spark plugs, ignition wires, air filter, fuel filter and pcv valve. There are no other adjustments.

TOYOTA CELICA TURNS ON BUT DOES NOT START??

(THERE,S NUMBEROUS WAYS WHY IT WILL NOT CRANK ) NO1 CHECK TO SEE IF IT,S GETTING GAS , THERE,S A PRESSURE RELEASE VALVE LOOKS LIKE A TIRE STEAM WITH A BLACK CAP ON IT PRESS IT IN WITH PHILLIP SCREW DRIVER AND IF THE GAS SHOOT OUT IT,S GETTING GAS ) NO.2 TAKE A OLD SPARK PLUG ,DISCONNECT ONE OF YOUR SPARK WIRES AND CONNECT TO THE LOOSE SPARK AND TURN THE CAR OVER TO SEE IF IT,S GETTING FIRE ,AND IF IT,S NOT GETTING FIRE TO THE PLUGS IT,S YOUR CRANK POSTION SENSOR ,AND IF IT,S GETTING FIRE TO THE PLUGS . TAKE A TEST LIGHT WITH THE SWITCH TURN TO ON AND IF IT LIGHTS UP THAT MEAN THE CRANK POSTION SENOR IS WORKING ,BUT IF YOU ARE GETTING FIRE FROM ALL OVER THERE,S ONE THING TO CHECK AND THATS YOUR DISTRUBATOR ,STICK THE TEST LIGHT IN WHERE ONE OF THE SPARK WIRES ARE AT AND IF IT LIGHT,S UP THE DISTRUBATOR IS BAD ,AND JUST REPLACE IT ,OR CHECK FOR YOUR FUSE RELAY TO YOUR FUEL PUMP AND THAT SHOULD DO IT

Backfiring and constant miss firing, engine not running smoothly during idling and loud miss firing sound at exhaust at full throttle opening.

You have a timing problem. Check for loose/broken belts. also see if the distributer cap is worn out or cracked. Replace it if it looks worn out. Change spark plugs....
Sounds like a typical ignition problem. If your handy, you can do this all yourself.
Change plugs wires and distruber cap.

Out of timing on the distruber. need to know where rotor button would set on compression stroke, on 350 lt1 engine

pull the #1 plug(drivers side front) bump it around till compression stroke, use a small probe of some sort to feel when the piston is top dead center, then the rotor is to point to the #1 plug wire(just follow the wire to the cap)

I need to find out where the # 1 wire location is on ther distributor cap and where it faces. on the cap where it would face, of to the side or in the back or the front.

In most vehicle's distributor caps it is marked clearly.
You can easily locate the # 1 on the distributor, alll you have to do is rotate the engine to its top dead center mark found on the front crankshaft pully, remove spark plug on the piston number one and six cylinder, by the help of the dip stick you will be able to note that the pistons are on top( you will have to put the dip stick in the hole of the spark plug).
It will be better too to remove the valve cover so tht you would thn be sure tht the # 1 cylinder 's valves are fully closed both inlet and exhaust thus it being on ignition stroke whereby the rotor in the distributor would be on the # 1 wire, this explanation is taking into account the valve timming hasn't been distrubed.
Hope this helps!
