Question about 2002 Chevrolet Impala

2002 Chevy Impala rear brakes in removing the brake caliper bolt / pins the hex head of the lower bolts on each wheel were rounded off and very tight to remove I purchased new bolts from the local auto parts store and notice that they are different (one has a turned down end with a neoprene sleeve the other is metal one diameter to the end). I am wondering if the bolts had been reversed during a previous install. what is the correct position for these bolts?

The bolt with the bushing attached to the end goes down. This prevents the brakes from making a clicking noise when applying and releasing the brakes.

Lift the front of your Ford F-250 off of the ground using a jack and jack stands. Remove the wheels from the Ford with a lug nut wrench to prepare the truck for servicing. 2 Open the hood on the engine compartment and take the lid off of the master cylinder that bolts to the brake assister on the driver's side firewall.3 Remove the hex-head bolts on the back of the brake caliper with a socket. With the bolts removed, pull the caliper off of the Ford's brake rotor.4 Pull the old brake pads out of the caliper and discard them. Squeeze the brake piston back into the backside brake caliper with pliers, and then insert the new pads into the brake caliper.5 Pull the rotor cap cover off the middle of the rotor with a screwdriver and use a socket to remove the nut located behind the cover.6 Pull the rotor off of the wheel spindle.7 Remove the old wheel bearings from the brake rotor and insert them into the new rotor. If the old wheel bearings are worn, replace them with new bearings.8 Slide the new rotor onto the wheel spindle and secure it using a bolt and socket. After you tighten the bolt, press the cover back onto the rotor.9 Place the caliper on the rotor and secure it with a socket and hex-head bolts. 10 Duplicate the process on the passenger side of the F-250. 11 Close the master cylinder after putting the wheels back on the Ford and lowering it to the ground. Press on the brake pedal to seat the pads against the rotor
Replace the F-250's Rear Brakes 1 lift the rear of the Ford F-250 off the ground with a jack and jack stands. I am trying to replace the rear drivers side wheel bearing and hub assembly combined. I have having problems removing the hub assembly already on the car. What do i need to do to fix this problem


Remove offending wheel and set park brake extremely tight. Remove brake pads from caliper, and then unbolt caliper. Release the park brake. Unbolt the heater supply tube. Remove six 8mm hex bolts on the CV joint near the transmission. Remove axle. Remove four bolts on outside of housing that hold the 2 bearing race retainers. Reinstall new bearing into the housing... again this will require the EBS tool, and of course you'll have to rearrange the parts of the tool. Once the new bearing is installed, reinstall the bearing race retainers and the four screws that hold the retainers. Carefully reinstall the axle, making sure not to push the hub out of the bearing again.Reinstall six 8mm hex bolts holding the CV joint to the transmission. Reinstall rotor then set parking brake extremely tight.Reinstall brake caliper andl brake pads. Reinstall heater supply tube and wheel, torque wheel bolts to 96 ft-lbs, re-install transmission cover and suspension cover. How to change brake pad and check rotors

To Remove:
  1. Drain brake fluid to ½ full level in reservoir.
  2. Remove the front wheels. toy_car_cam_frontbrakepads.gif

  3. Remove the front brake caliper assembly.
  4. Remove the 2 anti-squeal shims from each of the 2 brake pads.
  5. Remove the wear indicator from each of the 2 brake pads.
To Install:
NOTE: When replacing worn pads, the anti-squeal shims must be replaced together with the pads.

  1. Using a large C clamp or equivalent press piston into the caliper.
  2. Apply disc brake grease to the inside of each anti-squeal shim.
  3. Install the anti-squeal shims on each pad.
  4. Install the pad wear indicator clip to the pads.
  5. Install the pads with the pad wear indicator plate facing upward.
  6. Install the brake caliper with the 2 mounting bolts. Torque the bolts 25 ft-lb (34 Nm).
  7. Install the front wheels.
  8. Fill the master cylinder with new clean brake fluid.
  9. Pump the brake pedal several times to seat the brake pads.

  2. Coat both sides of the outer anti-squeal shim with pad grease.
  3. Install anti-squeal shims to each pad.
  4. Install wear indicators on the 2 brake pads.
  5. Install the caliper slide pin bushings (TMMK made) (Kentucky).
  6. Install the rear brake caliper with the slide pins. Torque the slide pins as follows:
    • TMC made (Japan): Torque the caliper slide pin 25 ft-lb (34.3 Nm)
    • TMMK made (Kentucky): Torque the caliper slide pin 34 ft-lb (47 Nm)
  7. Fill the master cylinder with new clean brake fluid.
  8. Pump the brake pedal several times to seat the brake pads.
  9. Install the rear wheels.

  4. Install new gaskets and connect the brake hose to the caliper with the banjo fitting bolt. Torque the fitting bolt 22 ft-lb (29.4 Nm).
  5. Fill the reservoir with brake fluid.
  6. Bleed the brake system.
  7. Install the front wheel.
Rear To Remove:
  1. Remove the rear wheels.
  2. Remove the brake caliper assembly.
  3. Remove the brake pads.
  4. Remove the 2 bolts and the caliper mounting bracket.
  5. Place match marks on the disc and axle hub.
  6. Remove the rear disc.
To Install:
  1. Align the match marks and install the rear disc.
  2. Install the rear brake caliper mounting bracket. Torque the bracket bolts as follows:
    • TMC made (Japan): Torque the bracket bolt 46 ft-lb (61.8 Nm)
    • TMMK made (Kentucky): Torque the bracket bolt 34 ft-lb (47 Nm)
  3. Install the rear brake caliper with the slide pins. Torque the slide pins as follows:
    • TMC made (Japan): Torque the caliper slide pin 25 ft-lb (34.3 Nm)
    • TMMK made (Kentucky): Torque the caliper slide pin 32 ft-lb (43 Nm)
  4. Install new gaskets and connect the brake hose to the caliper with the banjo fitting bolt. Torque the fitting bolt 22 ft-lb (29.4 Nm).
  5. Fill the reservoir with brake fluid.
  6. Bleed the brake system.
  7. Install the rear wheel

How do I remove the front brakes? Is there a special tool?


prev.gif next.gif Some GM Vehicles use aT-30 Torx bit, other use a regular hex head bolt with a ratchet tor remove the caliper. The following shows how to remove the caliper from the line. Brake Caliper Removal & Installation Front To Remove:
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2. If the brake fluid level is higher than midway between the maximum-full point and the minimum allowable level, remove brake fluid to the midway point before proceeding.
  3. Raise and support the vehicle.
  4. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  5. Hand tighten 2 wheel lug nuts to retain the rotor to the hub.
  6. Install a large C-clamp over the brake caliper with the ends of the clamp against the rear of the caliper body and the outer brake pad.
  7. Tighten the C-clamp until the caliper piston is compressed into the bore enough to allow the piston to slide past the rotor and remove the C-clamp.
  8. Disconnect the brake line from the caliper and discard the two copper gaskets.
  9. Plug the brake line and the opening in the brake caliper. NOTE: On second design hardware, the upper caliper pin bolt has a bushing as part of the bolt. The lower caliper pin bolt is of a solid design.
  10. Remove the caliper pin bolts and the caliper from the bracket.
To Install:
  1. Replace any damaged caliper pin boots.
  2. If reusing the brake caliper pin bolts, wipe the old grease from the brake caliper pin bolts.
  3. On first design hardware apply high temperature silicone brake lubricant to the brake caliper pin bolts. On second design hardware, apply a thin coat of NIGLUBE® or equivalent grease to the brake caliper pin bolts. In either case it is not necessary to apply lubricant to the threads of the pin bolts.
  4. Install the brake caliper over the brake pads into the brake caliper bracket. NOTE: On second design hardware, the upper caliper pin bolt has a bushing as part of the bolt. The lower caliper pin bolt is of a solid design.
  5. Install the caliper pin bolts and torque to 38 ft-lbs (51 Nm) (1996 - 1999), 63 ft-lbs (85 Nm) (2000 – 2005).
  6. Install the brake hose bolt with new copper brake hose gaskets to the brake hose and to the brake caliper, torque to 33 ft-lbs (45 Nm) (1996 – 2001) 32 ft-lbs (43 Nm) (2002 – 2005).
  7. Bleed the brake system.
  8. With the engine OFF, gradually apply the brake pedal to approximately 2/3 of its travel distance and slowly release the pedal. Wait 15 seconds and do it again until a firm brake pedal is obtained.
  9. Remove the 2 wheel lug nuts to retain the rotor to the hub.
  10. Install the tire and wheel assembly.
  11. Lower the vehicle.

10. 1/4 in. Drive Torque Wrench

Supplies:
1. Brake Cleaner

Steps:
Step 1 Park your vehicle on a solid level surface. Set the parking brake and chock the rear wheels.
o Tip: Safety Tip:Always wear safety glasses when working on your vehicle. Wear other personal protective equipment (PPE) when necessary, for example latex gloves or safety shoes.

Step 2 Remove the front wheel hub caps if applicable. Using a tire iron, break loose the front wheel lug nuts but do not remove.
o Tip: Lug nuts fasten the wheel to the hub and may be on very tight. To gain more leverage, use a breaker bar to loosen the nuts.

Step 3 Using a floor jack, lift up the front of your vehicle.
o Tip: Using an aftermarket floor jack, instead of the original equipment (OE) jack, can make the job easier and safer. Verify the condition of the floor jack before use.

Step 4 Secure the vehicle with jack stands on both sides for safety before starting any work. The pinch welds or the frame rails are the two best locations. Do not rely on the jack to hold the vehicle up while working.
o Tip: Try to find a flat, level, and strong surface to put the jack stands.

Step 5 Remove the front wheel lug nuts. Remove the front wheels and set them aside.

Step 6 Inspect the brake caliper for any signs of binding. Look for rust and uneven brake pad wear.

Step 7 Remove the brake caliper mounting bolts (sliding bolts).

Step 8 Support the caliper up and away from the working area. Make sure you do not kink or pinch any brake lines.
o Tip: Use a bungee cord to secure the brake caliper out of the way and hang it on the suspension spring.

Step 9 Clean the sliding bolts and lubricate them.

Step 10 Install the new caliper over the brake pads and rotor. Attach the caliper to the mounting bracket with the sliding bolts. Tighten the caliper sliding bolts to manufacturer’s specifications.

Step 11 Disconnect the brake line from the old caliper. Attach the brake line to the new caliper using new copper washers. Tighten the banjo bolt.

Step 12 Repeat for the other side. Bleed the front brakes.

Step 13 Reinstall the front wheels. Torque the lug nuts to the manufacturer specifications in a star pattern.

Step 14 Remove jack stands and lower the vehicle to the ground.

Step 15 Verify that you have a solid brake pedal. Road test the vehicle to verify brake caliper repair.

2002 silverado 2500HD rear brake question????


You'll need a T-55 torx bit to remove the rear caliper pins/bolts. You can try using an insert style bit...one that removes from the socket or perhaps purchase a replacement bit (one that would be used in a cordless drill/driver.) The one I used had a 5/16" hex shank. Like you said, there is very little clearance between the head and the leaf springs, which won't allow room for a breaker bar and torx bit. So using a 5/16" wrench, ( I'd recommend a 6 point box wrench to prevent slipping or rounding off.) I was able to loosen the bolt. Or plan B is to remove the caliper mounting bracket which is held on by two 21 or 22 mm hex head bolts. Which would have to be removed to remove the brake rotor.

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Remove the rear wheels.
  2. If equipped, disconnect the brake pad wear sensor from the harness.
  3. Counterhold the lower sliding pin using a thin open-end wrench and remove the caliper-to-sliding pin hex bolt.
  4. Pivot the caliper upward or if necessary remove the upper caliper-to-sliding pin hex bolt.
  5. Using a brake caliper retraction tool, select the appropriate sized piston press arbor and install the tool onto the brake caliper. Following the tool manufacturer's recommendations, use the tool to rotate the caliper piston clockwise as it is pressed into the brake caliper housing, until it is fully retracted.

  2. If equipped, install a new brake pad wear sensor in the pad if the plastic part has been worn through on the old sensor. New sensors are not required unless the wire inside the plastic part has been exposed.
  3. Lubricate the slider bolts with approved brake grease.
  4. Install the brake pads onto the bracket assembly, and then carefully lower the caliper over the caliper mount. Check and make sure that the pad springs are correctly seated.
  5. Replace all removed caliper-to-sliding pin bolts and torque to:
  6. 1990-97 Passat models: 25 ft. lbs. (35 Nm)
  7. 1998-00 Passat models: 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm)
  8. If equipped, connect the brake wear sensor wire to the harness. Check for a good connection as most problems with the sensor circuit are caused by faulty connections. Check that the wire is held by the loop in the dust cover and the connector is held at the clips.
  9. Install the wheels and hand tighten the lug bolts. Lower the vehicle carefully until the tires begin to contact the surface and torque the lug bolts to specification in a crisscross pattern to:
  10. M12 x 1.5 lug bolts: 81 ft. lbs. (110 Nm)
  11. M14 x 1.5 lug bolts: 89 ft. lbs. (120 Nm)

  1. Loosen the wheel lug nuts slightly.
  2. Raise and support the vehicle safely.
  3. Remove the wheels.
  4. Disconnect the brake hose from the caliper. Plug the end of the hose to prevent loss of fluid. Some brake lines have a union bolt and gasket type line attached to the caliper. Do NOT lose the washers.

  1. Hold the sliding pin and remove the bolts that attach the caliper to the torque plate.

  1. Grease the caliper pins and bolts with Lithium grease or equivalent. Temporarily install the caliper on the torque plate with the installation bolts.

  1. Hold the sliding pin and tighten the installation bolts to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm) on the front wheels, and 14 ft. lbs. (20 Nm) in the rear.
  2. Attach the flexible brake hose to the caliper with new gaskets. Tighten the hose to 22 ft. lbs. (30 Nm).
Install the brake hose lock securely in the lock hole, in the caliper.
  1. Fill and bleed the system.
  2. Install the wheel, lower the vehicle and tighten the lug nuts.
  3. Before moving the vehicle, make sure to pump the brake pedal to seat the pads against the rotors.
  4. Check for leaks.
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2. Remove the wheels.
  3. Disconnect the brake hose from the caliper.
  4. Remove the bolts that attach the caliper to the torque plate. If applicable, hold the flats of the sliding pin with a wrench while loosening the caliper attaching bolts.
  5. Lift up and remove the caliper assembly.
To install:
  1. Install the caliper and loosely install the bolts.
  2. Hold the flats of the sliding pin with a wrench, then tighten the bolts. Tighten to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm) except on Celica rear calipers. Tighten the bolts on Celica rear calipers to 34 ft. lbs. (47 Nm).
  3. Connect the brake hose to the caliper, using 2 new washers.
  4. Fill the brake system to the proper level and bleed the brake system.
  5. Add brake fluid to the reservoir to fill to the correct level.
  6. Lower the vehicle to the ground.
