I was afraid you would ask this question. Many years ago, they marked #1 on the dist, but I think this is less a practice now so that they can use the same part for many cars. If there is no #1 mark on your dist, you will have to get your #1 piston to TDC of the compression stroke. The rotor will then point to #1 wire terminal. TDC is not hard to get to, as there is a timing mark on the crankshaft pulley; however, the valves may be on either the compression or exhaust stroke. There are a couple ways to determine that you are on the compression stroke. One way is to watch the valves actuate (both valves close long before reaching TDC) and the other is to look at the camshaft timing marks. The method to use depends on which is easiest to see. For example, if you take off your oil cap, can you see the valves for the #1 cylinder? It's too big a chore to take off the valve cover, and the timing cover is also usually hard, but maybe easy in some cars. If these are both hard on your car, I recommend you just go to TDC by aligning the marks on the crankshaft pulley and assume you are on compression stroke. If the car doesn't start, it will not hurt the engine--just rotate all the wires 2 places and now it should be correct. Does this make sense? Please ask more questions if I confused you.

I cannot get the timing right so it can run

Let's make sure the Firing Order is correct first:
For the 3.0L V-6:
Firing Order:
1-2-3-4-5-6
Cylinders:
(back of engine)
1------3-------5
2------4-------6
(front of engine)
Distributor:
....(back)
...........1
......6
5..............2
...........3
......4
....(front)
Rotation: Clockwise

Next you should be considering based upon your Year (1992) the Timing Belt may be worn and/or skipping. It may be time to remove and replace the Timing Belt.
Click on the following Link. It has the Timing Belt & Mark(s) Diagrams you will need.
