There is a short somewhere in the car. try taking the fuses out one at a time and see if there is a small spark when you touch them to their slot. if yes, that circuit is drawing current. There are a few circuits that draw current all the time, like clock, or maybe the cortesdy light if your door is open, but most of the fuses should not spark. When you find one that does but shouldn't be on when the key is off, you have isolated the short to that circuit. Next, you'll need to troubleshoot that circuit to see why it's using current. let us know if you get to that point.

Something is pulling too much power when the car is shut off. It may be as simple as your trunk light staying on when the trunk is closed (or glove box light, or dome light, or brake lights, etc). Do you have anything plugged into a power outlet (cigarette lighter) such as a DVD player or something?
You may have to try removing fuses one at a time until the problem goes away (install them while driving, of course). If you can get a meter to measure the drain current, it will make this much faster.

OK, the battery is OK but something is acting like it is left on, have you fitted anything recently? like a stereo, otherwise charge the battery and leave it for a few hours and see if the alternator is warm (it has 6 diodes, they can fail shorted or partially short and drain the battery, it will charge fine with 5 though.

Why is battery not working?

If you don't have the equipment to check the system take it to Auto Zone, etc, and have them check the system. Just because it is a new part doesn't insure it is good. They can also run a check for the codes. Both checks should be without charge.

My car wont start all the way. I have a Ford mustang coupe 3.8 engine 6 cylinder 2 door car. Its not the starter because I bought a new one and it almost crank up. The battery is fully charged I took it to...

If you took that battery to Auto Zone and they tested it and said it was good it may not be the battery but that would have nothing to do with it being the Alternator unless you removed the Alternator and took it in for testing and it tested good as well. If the the voltage Regulator is bad on that alternator it may not be allowing the proper amperage to the solenoid on the starter. It could possibly be the starter but if you pull the starter and take to Auto Zone they can put it on a test bench and load test it to be sure it is working. If the Starter is good and the Alternator test good as well as the battery check the cable going to the starter for a break in the insulation allowing it to ground and replace it if you find one. Also check the starter relay in the power distribution box or mounted on the drivers side fender wall, those are the locations for these on most vehicles. If all of that checks out then it will be time to look at the ignition itself. Through all of this make sure that any alarm you have installed is disabled to make sure the problem isn't a starter kill switch.

How to test a voltage regulator on a 1998 dodge caravan

It is built into the Alternator as best I recall. Have the alternator tested at Auto Zone or Advance Auto and that will indicate if there is a problem.

My 1998 dodge avenger 2.5l es will not hold a charge ..can jump start... has a new battery

Check the positive wire from the battery to the power distribution and starter locations and make sure you don't have any bare spots allowing a short. If that is good then take the alternator out and have it tested. Either the Alternator or the voltage regulator are malfunctioning. The voltage regulator is incorporated into the Alternator. Auto Zone, Pep Boys and Advance Auto can test this for you. If either is bad replace it. If the Alternator checks out then you need to check teh relays in the power Distribution center under the hood and the main bus at that location.

Battery or altenator

with the engine idling, check the voltage at the battery terminals. if its between 13 and 14.6 volts the alternator is probably ok. If its below 13V you need a new alternator. above 15V same thing.
Why did u think it needed repair? is your battery not holding a charge?

Will not start

The clicking noise is usually the sign of a dead battery. No gauges or noise could mean a REALLY dead battery. Check battery connections to make sure they are clean and tight. Have u tried to jump start it? U can take the battery to a parts store where most will check it's condition for free. So check this 1st and let me know what u find. If that's not it, we can continue.

Starter--1997 Dodge Caravan-3.0

I would take your car to wal mart or auto zone and have battery tested 1st. Bad batteries can cause this too. This test is free, if your battery is good then you can remove your starter. Its usually on the bottom side of engine and usually has 2 bolts with wires that run from battery. You can follow big red wire from + battery terminal to starter. You can also have your starters tested for free at auto zone once removed.

good luck.
