You say it has been sitting for sometime and thats the problem, you have a fuel problem you dont mention the [fuel filter]have you changed it and when you have done so remove the air filter and try to start, this engine is starving of fuel or air ,but i suspect when it fires it will be ok.adrian,,

SORRY. I DID REPLACE FUEL FILTER AND THE NOZZLES ARE SPRAYING INTO TB BUT WHEN YOU GAS IT - IT BOGGS STUMBLES THEN DIES. I CAN KEEP IT RUNNING BY SPRAYING GAS INTO TB.

1989 gmc 2500 305 engine back fire's on excelleration. Replaced Rotor and Cap. Also oxigen censer. Checked plugs, Wire's.

Backfire on acceleration could be caused by a worn lobe on the camshaft especially on a small block Chevy engine. You have to remove the valve covers and check the lift of each push rod. Sometimes it's quite obvious but sometimes it requires close inspection and even measuring the lift.

Fuel pump circuit (low voltage)
Try replacing the fuel pump relay or testing it if you have the manual.

On a 1989 GMC 2500 pickup. Put fuel system cleaner, Truck hardley runs and sputters when I drive. I have changed the fuel filter. Any advice?

Possibly has water in the fuel. Pick up a bottle of heet water remover from your parts house and see if this helps. Also make sure you are getting enough fuel to the engine. Find the serator valve on the fuel rail going to the throttle body. Push in the the valve and see if it sprays fuel or just trickles it out. If you have a fuel pressure tester make sure you are getting around 40-50 psi at the valve. If you are not then the fuel pump is going out.
