2013 Kia Optima. Fuel gauge shows 1/16th of a tank and the low fuel light is not on. Engine shut down. Out of gas. Add gas. Car starts up. What would cause the gauge to misread in this way?

most fuel gauge readings are not that accurate anyway so its out of fuel but not what the is guage reading. but the fuel level sensor in the tank may be at fault sound like its the prob but the instument pack should put the low fuel light on if its fitted on your vehicle spec but not always fitted even though the warning light is present hope this helps

Digital gas gauge reading incorrectly and inverted

sounds like a faulty sender unit or your just realy low on fuel before you spend any money on repairs try filling the tank up with fuel as if its been low for a long time the sender unit in the tank may be sticking the fuel will lube it and may start working again

Hi Barbara,here's a link to your code,it says to erase code and fill up with gas and see if code comes back,if it does then sensor is bad.Autozone may be able to remove code for free,they have scanners,call first.

What is code PO462?

code p0462 is low voltage on fuel level sensor possible causes are fuel was low more more likely is you filled up while car was running this is a common problem sometimes setting this code. you can check the seal around the gas cap and make sure there are no cuts and its sealing good. i hope this helps

Codes po 455 and po462

P0455 - Evaporative Emission Control System Leak Detected (no purge flow or large leak)
This indicates a fuel vapor leak or lack of purge flow in the EVAP control system. It means a large leak has been detected. The (EVAP) emission control system prevents the escape of fuel vapors from a vehicle's fuel system. Fuel vapors are routed by hoses to a charcoal canister for storage. Later, when the engine is running a purge control valve opens allowing intake vacuum to siphon the fuel vapors into the engine.

Symptoms: You likely won't notice any drivability problems.

Causes: A code p0455 most likely means one or more of the following has happened:
* A loose or improperly affixed gas cap
* A non-conforming gas cap (i.e. not factory/original brand)
* Other leak or damaged piece in EVAP system

Possible Solutions: With a p0455, the most common repair is to:
* Remove and reinstall the gas cap, clear the codes, and drive for a day and see if the codes come back.
* Otherwise, replace the gas cap, and/or
* Inspect the EVAP system for cuts/holes in tubes/hoses (you may hear a vacuum noise or smell fuel), repair if necessary

P0462 - Fuel Level Sensor Circuit Low Input
The powertrain control module (PCM) monitors the fuel level input (FLI) circuit for electrical failure. The test fails when the signal moves below the minimum allowable calibrated parameter for a specified fuel fill percentage in the fuel tank.

Causes:
* Empty fuel tank
* Fuel pump (FP) module concern
* Incorrectly installed fuel gauge
* Damaged instrument cluster
* Damaged fuel gauge
* FLI circuit shorted to CASE GND or PWR GND

Diagnostic Aids:
Monitor the FLI and FLI V PIDs in key on, engine running (KOER). A concern is present if the FLI PID is at 25% fill and the FLI V PID is less than 0.90 volt with a non-matching fuel gauge or the FLI PID is at 75% fill and the FLI V PID is greater than 2.45 volts with a non-matching fuel gauge.

Hope this helps to solve it.

My 1994 Mercedes c220's fuel gauge stopped working

Fuel level sensor is in the gas tank, may be faulty or just dirty, make sure to fill the tank entirely full with premium unleaded, ad a high quality fuel system cleaner / de-gunker, this may clean the sensor enough to feed back to the gauge. It could also be the fuel gauge itself, but that is less likely. Mercedes will be happier with at least 1/4 tank of fuel at all times, and don't skimp on low octane gas!
As for the check engine light, you may have a bad gas cap... believe it or not a gas cap that doesn't seal properly will throw the check engine light. If you get the codes read (for free) at an Autozone or similar parts store it will likely read "evap system" as the problem, which will likely end up being the gas cap.
Take your car to a service center that does a true "flush and fill" of your a/c system. Those little canisters will just waste your money, and they never truly clean and re-lubricate the system like a flush and fill will do.

Gas gauge goes to empty and then full after fillup

very well sounds like the sending unit in the tank. Try running some octane booster and fuel injection cleaner in tank of the truck to loosen any deposits on the float.

Fuel Gauge reads empty, but tank IS full

the float in your gas tank seems to have water in it....water is heavier than gas, that's why gas floats on top of water....try putting something like HEAT in it to dry up the water in your tank....
