Question about 1996 Cadillac DeVille

2 Answers

I have a 1996 DeVille with a coolant problem. I have replaced the air compressor, radiator, thermost at, serpentine belt. Car has run as hot as 255 and as low as 195 degrees. I am using up about 2 gallons of coolant and water in a one way 8 mile trip. What could possibly be wrong to the car?

is the coolant leaking, and if yes, from where? If not, is there steam coming out of the tailpipe?

Find out where the coolant is going, if not leaking, it may be going out the tail pipe. It it the 4.6 Northstar? if so, the water pump has its own belt/tensioner at the back of the front cylinder head (drivers side, front corner of head)

Did you check the hoses to see if they are tight? The bottom of the radiator may have a leaking hose as well. Check the freeze plugs to see if they are leaking. Also check the cylinder heads for any leakage.

Reasons for car temperture to run hotter

A vehicle generally runs hot if low on coolant, that is the first thing to check. If coolant levels are ok, make sure your serpentine belt is tight and not squealing. If loose replace the belt tensioner and belt. Third the thermostat may be sticking and needs to be replace, usually located below the top radiator hose where it joins the intake manifold. You give little information on how hot, so it may just be the cooling systems needs flushing and the coolant replaced.

I was driving and all of sudden the serpentein belt ripped and the car started to shake like crazy. then it started to smoke and overheated. one of the pulleys at the bottom, not sure if the harmonic...

Power steering pulley is on the top. The largest pulley is the crankshaft pulley.
But the 2 on the bottom are the crankshaft pulley and ac compressor. Slightly
above those 2 pulleys is the water pump. Which ones not turning?
And when the serpentine belt broke your water pump was no longer circulating
engine coolant because the belt turns the water pump.

When the serpentine belt breaks you should not drive the car even
though it will run. How long did you drive the car after the belt broke?

So you replaced the belt and then started it? And you can actually drive in reverse?
If you drove the car very far with the belt broken you may have done damage to your engine. I mean
its most likely you did do some damage.

1995 toyota avalon, overheating, just changed s/belt compressor stop working, now it runs hot. is this now a prblm with water pump or first thermostat?

I do not see a good connection between the serpentine belt and the engine overheating suddenly.

Perhaps you have a lot of burnt belt rubber on the water pump pulley?

Is the upper radiator hose hot? If so the stat is opening. If you start the car cold with the radiator cap off you can watch for coolant starting to flow and make sure the stat works...if the flow is low you have either a blocked stat or poor belt grip at the waterpump. Have you flushed the radiator recently? After 15+ years your car could be ready for a cleaning.

How to dianose waterpump to find problem

Could be the water pump or the serpentine belt is slipping on the water pump pulley. Is the radiator coolant hot? If it is, the coolant is not circulating through the block and heater core. I am assuming you see and hear no leaks and you have installed the thermostat in the correct direction to match the coolant flow. You should be able to squeeze the radiator hose before the thermostat and feel it expand when you have the engine running. You might be able to splice a hose with a T connection and valve to see the flow. Otherwise you would have to take out the pump and check the impeller.

If the thermostat is not opening then the engine heats up. So I would replace that first and then see about the fans not turning.

Hope this helps

Replaced bad AC unit with floater pully, now no heat, overheating

most likely when you replaced coolant line and refilled rad the system was not bled properly.
fill the system with 50/50 again and top up the reservoir. run the engine to 2000 rpm and look at temp gauge . it should rise to middle and drop to low this means t stat opend and air is out now let engine idle and top up coolant. good luck
