Question about 2006 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD 2WD

Oil pressure gauge erratic reading full pressure then no pressure. it is bouncing back and forth while driving. Where is the sending unit?

Its on top of the engine at the very back, under the windshield, drivers side.

My oil gauge is going back and forth on my 1996 Ford F250, I have change the oil coolant sensor. When I drive a few miles the oil gauge goes crazy. Need help? I have change the oil sending unit also.


The oil temperature sensor could be in the oil level sender unit - it depends how many connecting wires there are. If it is in there it would not be as accurate as if it is placed in the main oil gallery, perhaps combined with the oil pressure sensor.

I advise you to re-read your vehicle handbook and ensure you know the exact functions of the instruments. Often the oil gauge is a level gauge only until the engine is started and then becomes an oil pressure gauge, therefore a fluctuating gauge might indicate a fluctuating oil pressure...

If that is so, worrying about it now could save worrying more expensively later.

2005 Chevy Silverado show low/erratic (0-20 lbs) oil pressure.


More then likely the sending unit is faulty, but to be safe hook up a mechanical test gage at the oil pressure sender port and check oil pressure hot engine, if it is steady then replace the sending unit.

I have a 2001 monte carlo ss keeps showing low oil pressure and they guage is going back and forth I have the right amount of oil in the engine


Could be a bad sending unit (sensor) casing the problem, or maybe something else:
You say that the "gauge is gong back and forth" when is this happening? At idle, then I would suspect the sensor. But other items might be the oil pump pressure regulator or a cracked pick-up tube, not likely, but possible.
Now if the gauge pressure is fluctuating while driving, there could be a host of problems such as: oil pump or main bearings wear or some internal leak.
The best test at this stage would be to connect a manual oil pressure gauge to the engine to see what exact oil pressure is reading.
Don't drive the car until you get this fixed. You could turn a small problem into a big one if the engine truly is not getting oil. A cheap repair could go to 3-4 grand if you fry the bearings in the engine.

Oil pump is going bad in my 1999 chevy lumina


First we would need to know when this occurs. Asuming the oil level is at the full mark!. If the pressure goes up during acceleration and down at idle when engine is fully warmed up, then this is normal. An engine requires 10 psi of oil pressure per 1,000 rpm ( ex. 20 psi at 2,000 rpm, 25 psi at 2,500 rpm, and so on ) . If the gauge is moving back and forth erratically at idle , i would say the gauge is bad. If it drops to 0 while accelerating I would say your oil pump is bad. If from time to time it seems to work and other times it seems not to work, I would say the oil pressure sending unit for the gauge is bad. If the pump failed you would start to here a Knocking noise from the engine in a short period of time. Use the above scenario's to narrow down what it may be.

My 01 bonneville oil pressure gauge is showing 120 and my gas gauge is all over the place


HI, the oil pressure sending unit may be malfunctioning at this point. this will cause erratic readings. if your oil level is proper and there are no apparent oil leaks, you will need to replace the oil pressure sending unit. this will fix the erratic oil pressure readings.

Concerning the gas gauge. this device also has a sending unit that sends the correct fuel level reading to the gas gauge via wire transfer. this sending unit is located and attached to the fuel pump assembly inside the gas tank. replacing this device will fix this issue as well.

hello,
the problem could be in the sending unit. this is a wired potentiometer and if you have a broken wire in the potentiometer, then that is what would happen.

you can verify this by grounding the sending unit wire to ground. you will have a full tank reading always. then use the car and see if it will still bounce and very erratic. if does not do that, then the sending unit is the problem. if it still do the erratic reading, then there are more problems.
