what Wheelercolts says is exellent, in addition to all he says, take the ignition cap of, and when all marks are on the dot, look at the rotor. It has to be aligned with a mark that's on the body of the distribuitor.

You are probably right, the clearance between the pistons and the valves is very tight on the 16 valve engines. one of the valves may have hit a piston., or even worse bent a rod or damaged the crank.
I would run a compression check, or leakdown check before pulling the head. I have a service manual for 90-93 Passats w/ 9A 16 valve engines. the manual says compression should be 145-189 psi. limit 109 psi w/ 44 psi max difference between cyclinders.

On these engines you also need to check that the timing on both cams is ok.

Yes, you could of damaged a valve by rotating then engine or the cam. Now this only applies if it's a non clearance engine.. now what you might have done is rotated the cam out of timing while doing whatever it is you were trying to do. SO you might have to dis-assemble the timing chain/gears to try and reset everything

The static timing must be set at TDC of number 1 piston. I suspect removal of the cover will be required.

Finding out how to find lost cam timing mark on a 1997 volvo 960

you are in a bit of a bind. Turning the engine over will result in bent valves so do not touch the crank shaft. you have to loose off all the rockers/ cam followers even to the point of removing the cam shaft. having done that remove no1 cylinder spark plug and by the use of a thin piece of wire turn the crank until the piston reaches top dead center. find this by rocking the crank back and forward until the piston dose'n move up or down check for the crank timing mark next replace the cam shaft and position the cam lobes for no1 piston in such a position that the inlet and exhaust valves move slightly up or down when the cam is moved slightly left or right. this is called valve over lap and with the piston on top dead center means that you now have valve timing for the engine. Cam timing marks can be dot on gear to shiny link on chain or if using a belt a dot on tooth lineing up with mould mark or join on head before starting up do a compression check to prove that there are no bent valves. if you are not mechanically minded enough to attempt the valve timing method it may be cheaper in the long term to let a qualified person do the job

Timing guides collapsed dropped timing chains.

if you have the v6 with the 4.0 OHV set the #1 piston to top dead center and then when looking at the gears where your timing chain goes look for a dot on your engion near the small gear and align the dot with the dot on the small gear. you will have to put the chain around both the top and bottom gears at the same time you might need to turn the piston a little past top dead center when doing this to get the little gear to sit in place with the slot on the back side of the gear. ( i just rebuilt my engion )

For the correct valve timing for ford EA falcon 6cylinder,4L is piston 6 or 1 rocking and does piston 1 or 6 need to be top dead centre

Always number one cylinder, the front most piston is always number one. The pointer in the dist cap will be pointing to the number one wire when it is at TDC. Other wise it is on exhaust stroke. Hope this helps.

Head was pulled without marking gears or ignition. how do i start from scratch

You need to turn the engine over and bring it up to top dead center (TDC). Aline your put the chain or belt on. The crank gear will be on you just will need to aline the cam gear as I believe it is overhead cam. Do NOT force the cam gear to turn as you can bend your valves. When you are putting in the distributer as you slide it in it will rotate a bit. Make sure it is alined to where your rotor will be faceing to the #1 position on the cap. I hope you understand. If need be I can look up the timing marks for the cam for you just post a comment if you need. When I say to bring to TDC you turn the engine over to where the # 1 piston is to the top of the cylinder. Hope this helped and good luck.

I would like instructions on how to set the timing gears for a 1987 Jetta 1.8 8V.

Remove tappet cover and turn engine till the lobes on the cam shaft at no.1 cylinder are facing upwards and not pushing on the lifters. The cam gear has a little line on the side of it near one of the teeth that should line up with the top edge of the cylinder head.Get no.1 piston at TDC (top dead center) and check that the crank gear mark lines up with the marks on the plastic cam belt cover.Fit belt turn engine and check marks again.

1983 toyota 22r/2.4 had head shaved .022 installed cam shaft 180 degrees out tryed to start noticed problem.corrected problem,in result intake valve appears to be staying open on cylinder 1and4.question is...

piston has contacted the valves that stay open. they are bent and you need to remove the head and replace them and then reinstall the head with the #1 piston at top dead center and the cams for the #1 cylinder both pointing down, this is the end of the compression stroke and the begining of the power stroke. at this point on the valve train and valve springs are affecting the valves, keeping them open and the rocker arms are not affecting the valves and should both be loose. set distributor to fire on cylinder #1.
