Question about Ford Mustang

87 mustang with 302 engine, turns over but will not fire. Have changed coil and coil wire. What could be the problem?

Ignition module or fuse/relay, possibly switch. Check for voltage at coil terminal to rule out switch/fuse/relay.

What is the spark plug firing order for a 1989 Ford Bronco with a 302 Cu. In. V8 engine?


There are three kinds of 302s made from 1982-2001. 5.0L HO This engine was used in 1983-1995 Mustangs, Mark VII Lincolns, and some T-birds and Cougars. All Explorer 5.0L engines are 5.0L HO engines as well. They use the 351W firing order, 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8. Except for the 1983-84 Mustangs, all of these engines are roller cam equipped. They use a reverse rotation water pump and front cover. The 1994-5 Mustang and all Explorers use a unique front cover and water pump. 5.0L Full Size Car This engine was used in 1982-1990 Crown Victoria and Grand Marquis. They use the 289-302 firing order, 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8. Most of these cars are not roller cam equipped, however sometime in the early 1990s they started using roller cams but retained the 302 firing order. They use a standard (clockwise) rotation water pump and front cover. 5.0L Truck (except Explorer) These engines are similar to the Full Size Car engines, except they use different intake manifolds and camshaft profiles. They also use the 289-302 firing order, 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8. They also began using roller cams sometime in the early 1990s. They use a reverse rotation water pump and front cover.

if you are certain that the wires have been replaced correctly then you could have a bad set of wires even though they are new this happens sometimes but it sounds as if the firing order is off check the engines timing to see if its still in time.

If you are getting fuel and spark at the cylinder then check the timing. It's not uncommon for worn timing chains to jump at shut off or start up. To check turn the engine over until the timingmarks on the crankshaft line up at 0. Trace the wire back from #1 piston, which is the front one on the passenger's side. On the cap it should be just to the right of the tab that locks the cap in the proper position on the distributor. Lift the cap and check the position of the rotor button. It should be directly under the tower for the wire or it should be 180 degrees off. If so turn the engine 1 turn until the timing marks line up at 0 again and look under the cap. If it's not lined up with the #1 wire, turn the distributor until it does. Tighten the distributor down and try the truck. If it fires you are looking at replacing the timing chain. If it jumped once it will jump again. Hope this helps.

I replaced ignition module and no spark still! I also did the trouble light on the neg on coil and pos on battery and no flashing on light so where do I go now?


Well, assuming that you have the light hooked up correctly ( one side on battery hot post, one on coil neg post, I'd look at the pickup assembly. That is where the module gets its signal to fire the coil. If that is no good then you won't have spark. To replace it, you will need to remove the distributor from the engine, remove the roll pin near the bottom of the stem, pull the drive gear off the stem, a few bolts at the top, and then the whole thing should just come apart. two more screws and the pickup will come out, goes back together in reverse. Take out plug one and stick your finger in the hole, have someone bump the engine until you feel a push of air, and then put the distributor back in set to cylinder one, put the cap and wires back on, plug back in, and then fire it up and time it.

Try your local library for diagrams and pictures of both engines and that way you can figure out how the wiring goes

87 dodge ramcharger not firing


Pull the coil wire out of center of distributor cap and lay it close to where you unpluged it from distributor cap, and turn over engine if coil is good you will see the spark jump. If no spark coil bad.
