2003 citroen C5 V6 petrol Catalytic Converter stuffed, it has burnt out and now blocking exhaust. Dealer cost to fix $A3500 - $A4000, rediculous for an exhaust system.

The catalytic converter is the first bulbous box past the exhaust manifold.

As spark plugs produced a temporary cure, assuming there isn't an engine problem causing the plugs to foul, the coil pack or at least one coil (as applicable) is probably faulty.

I always go for the fire, fuel & air first... but it starts... so
that's a really great indication... Could just need some fresh spark plugs... (ACDELCO R44LTS6) or a cold start valve ...

I've never found an elegant way to prove it...
So we'll just jump right into...

GET some liquid wrench Penetrating Oil and
soak the EXHAUST to CATALYTIC converter bolts
really well (couple of times).

If YOU OPEN the exhaust and the engine runs smooth...
you have found a PROBEM that will do both thing you are experiencing...

Now you have to figure if it is the CAT collapsing or a
MUFFLER BAFFLE blocking the out-flow.

(It's happened to me twice... but I'm pretty old)
((one converter & one muffler))

Might be easier just to take it to a muffler shop...
and have them run your engine codes...

If you have a reputable muffler and exhaust shop in your area they should be able to perform a flow test on your exhaust to see if your catalytic converters are plugged up or not. They simply drill a small hole in the pipe before and after the catalytic converter and insert a probe that measures the amount of exhaust pressure. They weld the hole up when done and the shop I have here local does this test for free.

p420 code has to do with your exhaust system,catylic converters,..sensors...could be a simple fix or not...

Is there any fault indication on the dash where the radio display is.
Anti pollution is basically citroens way of saying emissions system so it could be as simple as a loose emissions pipe but from what you say and the car does not run it could be your catalytic converter (part of the exhaust system) has failed causing the engine management system to cut in and protect the engine.
If there is no fault apart from anti pollution showing in the radio display find someone with a diagnostic machine to give you a better idea of the fault. Hope this helps a bit.

Check the hoses at the inlet manifold and throttle body aren't loose or leaking (vacuum leak)

faulty fuel pump or pressure low

blocked injector or fuel injector system fault

fuel pipe damaged or blocked

May be totally unrelated but I had the same issue on a 95 civic. It has "spark plug seals" that needed to be replaced. Dealer did it for about $250.

The only easy fix is some cleaner additive from halfords or the like and a fast trip with a big hill to burnt it out (it is a section of the exhaust, sometimes there us a tank under the rear bumper with some nasy fluid in it that is automaticaly fed in to burn it out)

the 2001-2002 3.8L V6 Naturaly Asperated (RPO L36 - Vin K) engines experience a problem when the front endcone insulation from the catalytic converter breaks away and blocks the front of the first catalyst brick preventing free flow of exhaust gas through the converter. GM has issued a special policy adjustment extending the warrenty of the catalytic converter for 10 yrs or 120,000 miles regardless of ownership. a dealer will replace it at no cost! take it in. i just did and my car runs like new!
