Did this recently on 89 sunfire--I think same engine. Pretty easy as it's on the side near front of car. Remove radiator hose--use a drain pan or bucket to catch. Take belt off, and 3 bolts that hold pump in. Break it loose---more coolant may come out. Clean gasket surface on engine, use sealer on both sides of new gasket. reinstall new pump and belt. I will doublecheck procedures now and let you know if I missed anything.

hmmm...this is not what I remember doing. See instructions here: http://www.autozone.com/autozone/repairi...

I don't remember having to take the pulley off or the alternator bracket--and I don't remember the pump having 3 bolts. maybe bad memory or different car. If you have any more questions, I'll be online for a while.

Try cleaning the throttle body and butterfly plate. If that doesnt work, replace the IAC (idle air control) motor.

Where is the water pump on 2000 cavalier

  • The water pump is located on the front of the engine as you look at it from under the hood. See diagram below for a visual.

How to replace water pump on 2.4 chevy cavalier

This is a job for the dealer or cerified mechanic. The front cover and timing chain needs to be remove to access the water pump mounted behind the engine. The pump is driven by the timing chain and timing will need to be reset using special tools.

Engine getting weak in hot season

I WOULD CHECK THE LEFT FRONT CORNER OF THE HEAD FOR A GASKET LEAK IF THIS IS A 2.2L ENGINE. ALSO CHECK THE WATER PUMP. THE HEAD CAN ALSO CRACK WHEN THERE IS A POWER LOSS.

I WOULD CHECK THE WATER PUMP FOR A LEAK AT THE WEEP HOLE IF THIS IS A 2.4L ENGINE

Water pump replaced

timing belt has nothing to do with changing the water pump and that engine should have a timing chain anyway.... assuming it is the serpentine belt:

there should be a belt tensioner. A pulley that is spring loaded and keeps the belt tight. It wouldn't have any grooves in it like the other pulleys. get a wrench on the center bolt and pull it clock-wise, put the belt on, then release. It is easier to do with two people. make sure you route the belt correctly.

How to replace a water pump on a 1997 chevy cavalier

the best thing to help would be a 'Haynes repair manual', avialable at your local auto parts store. but replacing a water can be difficult if your not particularly mechanically inclined, because it often requires the removal of several other componets as well as flushing the cooling system
