Question about Mercury Sable

2 Answers

My father-in-law checked and topped off all of our fluids. As my wife was leaving, an "exclamation point" popped up on the dash and now the vehicle is shifting rough. My father thinks that he may have put too much transmission fluid, which is causing the sensor to act up (which is causing the computer to think there's a problem, hence making it shift rough). Can you shed some light what might be going on??? Please help!!

If the transmission fluid was over filled, it will definitely cause the problem you are experiencing. You need to get the vehicle up to operating temperature and recheck the fluid. If it is over filled, drain some out. Then unhook the battery and let set for about 30 minutes. This may reset the computer

Well, if the transmission is truly overfilled, that will cause problems, including damage to the transmission if you drive it very far.
Check your owner's manual or transmission dipstick to be sure, but most cars today call for checking the fluid level in Park with the engine running and warmed up. If it is at all above the "full" or "max" line, you need to drain some out. (Fluid expands as it heats, so if you check it cold, and it is near the full mark, you need to remove some. Then drive it enough to warm it up, and check it again.)
Few transmissions have a drain plug, so I would recommend buying a hand siphon pump, most auto parts stores carry these for about $5 or so, turn the engine off and run the pickup hose down the transmission dipstick tube, and pump out about a quart, and then retest it.
If the fluid level is OK, then obviously you have a different problem, but check this first.

My wife called and said their is a red exclamation point and the word brake on the dashboard screen. The emergency break is off

Check the brake fluid level. If low, you can top it off from a sealed / tightly covered can of brake fluid only. The low level of fluid also indicates that the pads are wearing and should be inspected to determine if they should be replaced soon. A squealing or scraping sound while driving or braking indicates that one or more sets of pads have worn too low and have begun scraping (and damaging) rotors. Needing to replace rotors can easily double (or more) the cost of a brake job.

Just had all new pads and rotors for a 2006 Chevy uplander put on by my father in law now my traction and stability lights are on and have very soft brakes. What could it be and do I have to take to a...

My first step would be to check the brake fluid level. And check the ABS/brake system fuse. These are easy checks that don't need a shop mechanic. My next step would be to check the speed sensors and wires on each of the wheel plates behind the disk. This is a considerable task - jacking up the car, removing each wheel and looking for damage to the sensor and wires. Third possibility *might* be air in the brake fluid, but I doubt it unless your father in law somehow ran the fluid low. Many shops recommend replacing the brake fluid every 4-5 years (maybe less) to prevent damage to brake components from contamination that builds up in the fluid. Personally, I don't this is your problem (it would be a long shot, IMHO). Hope this helps.

What is the light that looks like an exclamation point in parenthesis on the dash?

Some vehicles use That as a warning light, check to see if a different light cones on for park brake, if so then check levels ie brake fluid or tire pressures and possibly air filter or cabin filter can light that up. Or check your manual

Exclamation point warning light came on...what

A yellow explanation point symbol on the dashboard typically applies to the Tire Pressure Monitoring system. A thick ! inside a half drawn flat tire symbol to be complete and comes in yellow color when lit. Under normal vehicle set-up, if this indicator stays lit after the power-on selftest, you need to check your tires for any uneven pressures and adjust their pressures to correct specifications. Okay? : )

A red exclamation point inside a circle when lit indicates your parking brake is on, or your brake fluid level is low.

Blinking Orange Exclamation Point on 04 4runner

Since your question is listed as a 1999 Saturn SL and a Toyota 4Runner, I will answer both:

1999 Saturn SL
Typically the orange exclamation point dash warning light is indicating a problem with your brakes, parking or hand brake. Check to ensure that your emergency brake is completely disengaged.
Check to ensure proper brake fluid level.
Otherwise this could be indicating a problem with the ABS system.

04 Toyota 4Runner
Low tire air pressure. Inflate to approximately 32 PSI should correct your problem.

I hope this helps.

Yellow light on dash with flashing exclamation point inside it, what does this mean?

Hi !
The Yellow Exclamation Point is the indicator of malfunction in the Power Steering system.
1. Check the Tension of the Power steering Belt.
2. Check Oil level of Power steering , this must be below MIN level.
This is in a white bottle next to Break fluid.

I have a light that has come on the dash it is the ! (exclamation point) ..can you tell me what it means. 2008 3 series

The exclamation point in the circle is the Drive Stability Control. comes on whenever the tires are slipping, or if there is a problem with the system. brakes and/or fluids have their own lights.
