Question about Saab 9 3

1 Answer

Have a 2004 saab aero 9-3. Recently battery died. It was shorted. But 6 years old. Replaced battery. Now often when trying to start, makes one loud click and won't start. Displays flicker and/or go black, some controls sometimes activate on thier own such as door locks, windows, and sun roof when attempting start. Have bench tested starter and checked operation of altenator. Both check ok. HELP!

I was having the same problem with my 2004 9-3. I assumed the starter was bad and replaced it. I then charged the battery and found it wouldn't fully charge. After charging for several hours when I removed the charger I only showed 11 volts at battery posts. The new battery tested 12.8 volts and the car started well. With the car idling I tested and showed 14.6 volts at the battery post which confirmed my alternator was charging.

I do believe I replaced the starter in error and that it was just a bad battery. When my battery was failing I had dim headlights and flashing displays that you described and the clicking noises also. When I put jumper cables on my saab and let the bad battery charge for several minutes the car would start right up and the headlights would brighten up and even though the battery was bad the idle voltage at the battery posts was increased to 14.6 volts coming from the alternator.

Remember to remove the jumper cables quickly once the car starts to avoid possible electrical problems.

I have had bad starters in other vehicles that would draw a huge load on the battery and jump starting them would sometimes give enough voltage to turn the engine over and start it.

Bench tests aren't always correct because the components aren't under a true load. I had a brand new alternator fresh out of the box last year that was bad and wouldn't put out good voltage even though it bench tested perfect. Go figure.

Check your battery voltage with the engine off. It should read over 12 volts if its charged.

I have a 2004 Saab Aero 9-3 vert. Got a new battery over the winter and now the top does not work. Help?

The "top"? Convertible top? I would check the fuses first as it is always possible to blow a fuse when a battery is connected (or disconnected).

Clicking sound when trying to crank the car. Battery is only 6 months old.

A CLICKING SOUND USUALLY MEANS LOW VOLTAGE. COULD BE LOW BATTERY,OR BAD OR DIRTY CONNECTIONS AT THE BATTERY & OR STARTER. TRY JUMP STARTING WITH GOOD JUMPER CABLES " STRONG CLAMPS & #4 CABLE " . IF THAT WORKS THE BATTERY IS LOW IF IT STARTS CHECK VOLTAGE AT THE BATTERY WHILE RUNNING. VOLTAGE SHOULD READ BETWEEN 13.90 & 14.80. IF THAT IS OK , THE ALTERNATOR IS WORKING, CHECK THE BATTERY

I need a replacement for the original battery on my 2004 Saab 9.3 that is dead. What are your suggestions for the highest quality replacement battery??

Why bother?
You got 6 years out of the old one, and it was probably abused sitting around a lot while being shipped, waiting to be picked up, etc. A Saab does not have a hard starting engine, so there is hardly any need for anything special. And if you spend twice as much, it is not going to last twice as long. If you have no shorts and a good alternator, a normal battery is fine.

However, is you are determined to have the best, I believe that is an Optima. Costs about $150, and is a sealed gelcell battery that won't give off explosive or corrosive gases. Allows much deeper cycling and quicker recharge as well. Easy on the alternator.

Sounds like your starter motor is bad. Is the starter motor spinning?

remove the AC relay to shut the AC off all the time. Not sure why it wont start but you may havea security lockout. Fully charge the battery to proceed.

2004 Saab 9-3 Aero. Coolant tank and car beginning to not start.

coolant is what makes the car keep cool. it wouldnt keep it from running. sounds like a gas problem. check the fuel pressure and check all the fuel compartments. take it to a mechanic.. not Saab. they will do it for cheap maybe nothing.

1999 Saab 9-5 SE

I own a  99' 9-5 V6 turbo SE.  Had the same thing.  Started smelling gas in the car, sometimes.  Instead of not starting it died (as in the engine stopped) on a barren stretch of road at night.  Towed to the Saab dealer: Conclusion?  Replaced the fuel pump and sending unit. Don't ask how much.

Fault with saab 9-3 aero

Hello I have a saab 9.3 SS 04 and had the same problem.

- intermittent wipe doesn't work, at all
- windscreen washers don't work, at all
- "normal" continuous, and fast wipe work, but the wipers
freeze in the middle of the windscreen if you let go of the
control stalk, rather than sweeping back to the resting position
- same "freeze" happens with the manual wipe (push down on the control stalk)

The weird thing is that, this morning, for about 10 minutes, it seemed to fix itself,
partially - the washers started working etc - but the intermittent wipe still didn't work. However not long after that it went back to the symptoms described above.
also if I unplugged my car battery for a minute the washers worked for several seconds but again same problem occurs.

Solution is to replace your wiper motor. its that "simple"
worked for me. The wiper motor has a lot of electronic stuff and seems to control the washer engine.
Good luck.
