Question about 1988 BMW 7 Series

2 Answers

Ok I was going to buy a 1988 BMW. Its automatic, so I've done some research on the internet so I'm assuming its a pretty reliable car. The problem with this car is that the gas gage & speeding gage is wrong, do you know what could be wrong with it? And about how much it would cost to fix? Thanks for your help! -katrina

Speedometer problem can be just a speed sensor malfunction...Before anylysing whats the problem its unfair to guess how much it would cost.

Yes. You are correct. They are a very good car and you will very much enjoy the drive. Transmissions are are pretty solid as well as the engine. The key to their longevity, is to find someone you trust and KNOWS BMWs so they can perform the proper services and repiars at the proper time. That is where a lot of people fail and then so to do the cars. What sub model do you have(or are purchasing)(i.e. 740, 750, etc.) and I will look up parts price info for you. Stay away from the 750i!!

How do I replace the feul pump on my 1988 BMW 735i 6-cyl?

Remove your trunk mat and spare tyre. You can access fuel pump through plate in the trunk. Don't need to drop tank. Check fuses and relays first.

I am looking to buy a 2001 audi a6 1.8t se but it has done 143000 miles. my question is how reliable is this engine and is there anything i should be concernrd about or are there any reliability issues i...

Like most modern cars, they are pretty reliable if the required amount of servicing and care is given to them. The mileage is not excessive if the interior and body work is in good condition. One thing to take into account is that most work having to be done on an Audi is labour intensive and will therefore be pricey. If you are getting the car for a good price - OK, but then also, the resale value is not great so you want to look after it and keep it a good while. Hope that is what you were wanting to hear.

I am thinking about buying a BMW 545i but it has done 200000KM - 2004 and am just cautious for the KM reading. I have been told that they are easily reliable into the 500000 km mark - what can you tell me?

this car is totally unstressed,(unless ragged)the mechanicals should last well into 700k,BUT the service schedule is all important,CHECK THE HISTORY,if full then, BUY, with confidence.the biggest problem is the cost of parts when they do go wrong,(very few parts are made in china so you cant pay peanuts for the bits.) but WHAT A CAR........love em.with a passion.

My window on my vert was doing that. Short of opening up the door and trying to do it myself, I took it in to the BMW guys at Bimmerhaus. They readjusted the window for me and it was good to go. Pretty much cost 1 hour of labor and a couple of clamps. $100+ or thereabouts.

That doesn't sound like a bad car. They are pretty decent running cars. I would check the transmission operation and the fluid level and color. Honda Civics are a little more dependable, but a little more expensive to fix. If the car has been maintained, it should be ok. Make sure you give a good test drive around town and out on the highway.
