  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Raise and safely support the vehicle on jackstands.
  3. Remove any wheel and tire assemblies necessary for access to the particular line you are removing.
  4. Thoroughly clean the surrounding area at the joints to be disconnected.
  5. Place a suitable catch pan under the joint to be disconnected.
  6. Using two wrenches (one to hold the joint and one to turn the fitting), disconnect the hose or line to be replaced.
  7. Disconnect the other end of the line or hose, moving the drain pan if necessary. Always use a back-up wrench to avoid damaging the fitting.
  8. Disconnect any retaining clips or brackets holding the line and remove the line from the vehicle.
To install:
  1. Install the new line or hose, starting with the end farthest from the master cylinder. Connect the other end, then confirm that both fittings are correctly threaded and turn smoothly using finger pressure. Make sure the new line will not rub against any other part. Brake lines must be at least 1/2 in. (13mm) from the steering column and other moving parts. Any protective shielding or insulators must be reinstalled in the original location.
  2. Using two wrenches as before, tighten each fitting.
  3. Install any retaining clips or brackets on the lines.
  4. If removed, install the wheel and tire assemblies, then carefully lower the vehicle to the ground.
  5. Refill the brake master cylinder reservoir with clean, fresh brake fluid, meeting DOT 3 specifications. Properly bleed the brake system.
Connect the negative battery cable.

Probably a really simple question, but on a Mercury Mystique 1997 (manufactured 1996) brake master cylinder (with ABS), which port, front or rear, leads to the front wheel section of the ABS module?

Off the master cylinder. The front tube controls the rear brakes. And the back one controls the front brakes. Just a note. I don't know which year they started doing this, but, the front right brake goes/ties in to the left rear brakes. left front to right rear. This set up runs off the ABS module to the brakes.

How to change a brake light switch on a 98 mercury mystique

brake light switch location are usually located above the brake pedal, you have to visually look and see. If you follow the the brake pedal upward youll come across a switch possibly and when you depress the brake pedal you can see that the switch is no longer touching the brake pedal. If thats the location of the switch then you can see that youll have to disconnect it from the wires connected to this switch and there should be a connector that you can unplug, Most of them are very easy to disconnect. once disconnected you may remove the switch and replace. I hope this has helped

Brake lights for a 1996 Mercury Mystique

The "multifunction switch" is bad. In the old days, this was called the turn signal switch. The brake light wiring for the two non functioning lights goes through this switch. Have your mechanic check the wiring into and out of this switch. It's in the steering column.

Check for vacuum leaks. You can spray starting fluid around all parts of the intake.Observe idle as you do.If there is a leak the engine rpm will race higher. Also listen for hissing noise. Is the check engine light on?..If so what codes are stored..Good Luck!!!
