Question about 2002 Hyundai Santa Fe

2 Answers

I replace the high pressure hose and alternator yesterday, now the car is not shifting smoothly and the throttle cut out intermittently when I get it going down the road. The car is drivable if I use the manual shifted but still has the throttle issue.

I tested the alternator and it is working putting out 14 volts.

Thanks for your help, it was the throttle position sensor. We had disconnected the throttle in the process of changing the high pressure hose. All I had to do was disconnect the battery again and the TPS reset.

If you disconnected the battery ,it is possible the computer needs to be programmed,at the dealer,or a shop that has the software, but make sure the alternator is charging, and that the throttle position sensor is plugged up,and check all wire leads to make sure they are all hooked up,including grounds.

You need to have the electronic engine control system tested for faults, any Kragen or Autozone will do this for free, just ask for an OBD2 fault code test, well you are there confirm that the new alternator u installed is working properly, until the system is tested there is no way to know what might be causing the problem, just to many possibilities to guess.

I have 95 hummer h1 and it won't shift 1 to 2

1-2 shift does not happen at WOT (Wide Open Throttle) until you let off the gas:Best case: try replacing the TPS. Middle case: leak in the 2nd gear apply circuit (servo assembly or 1-2 accumulator). Double check by using the pressure gauge and watch for a big drop when the PCM commands 2nd gear. Worst case: poor line pressure rise (see below).
1-2 Shift shudder at WOT (Wide Open Throttle); delayed or abnormal 1-2 shift; There's a problem ONLY on the 1-2 shift: 1-2 accumulator piston cracked or stuck cocked in the bore. Check the yellow spring inside the accum housing for breakage. Also, if the accumulator housing walls are scored, the housing must be replaced.
1-2 shift is delayed and harsh, may not shift into OD: TPS needs to be checked for smooth and linear electrical response over the entire range of motion. If not, this must be replaced.
1-2 or 2-3 shift is slow/soft above part throttle:Transmission is on its way out. Transmission must be removed and rebuilt.

Hope this helps

How do i fix the problem for the code p1760 Thank you

p1 is toyota code, factory not federal code.
the shift solenoid error.

quote:
SLT malfunction. (fsm statements and below.)
CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION
The throttle pressure that is applied to the primary regulator
valve (which modulates line pressure) causes the solenoid
valve SLT, under electronic control, to precisely and minutely
modulate
and generate line
pressure according to the accelera-
tor pedal effort, or the detected engine power output.
This reduces the
function of line pressure and provides smooth
shifting characteristics.
Upon receiving the throttle valve opening angle signal, ECM
controls the line pressure by sending a predetermined (*) duty
ratio to the solenoid valve, modulating the line pressure, and
generating throttle pressure.
(*) Duty Ratio
The duty ratio is the ratio of the period of continuity in one cycle.
For example, if A is the period of continuity in one cycle, and B.
the valve is modulated. to get , what the TCM wants.

if the voltage on the SLT stays low or high for more than 1 full second
this DTC is thrown. (shorted, valve? or cut wires.? shorted wires to same valve.) it is a solenoid valve.

the fsm states
bad valve
bad wires connection
or bad ECU.
end quote:

the TCM function (tranny brain) controls this valve.
my interpretation, is that the brain, monitors the voltage at its own
output and sets this error when wrong.

it means, stuck high or low. the voltage (a square wave) is stuck
its is a hard electrical fault.
id measure the coil on valve connector , with an ohm meter
(resistance range) the coil of most read about 25 ohms.... (guess)
not infinity ever, and not 0 ohms (shorted)

i call these direct feed back monitors.
you can be sure its wrong the voltages. only why , remains.

P0116 - ECT Circuit Malfunction
OBD-II Trouble Code Technical Description

Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Circuit Range/Performance Problem
What does that mean?

The ECT (Engine coolant temperature) sensor is a thermistor which changes resistance based on temperature of the coolant in contact with it. The ECT sensor will be located in the block or coolant passage. Usually it is a two wire sensor. One wire is a 5 Volt supply from the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) to the ECT. The other is a ground to the ECT.

As the temperature of the coolant changes the resistance on the signal wire changes accordingly. The PCM monitors the reading and determines coolant temperature in order to perform essential engine fuel management. When engine coolant is low, sensor resistance is high. The PCM will see a high signal voltage (low temperature). When coolant is warm, the sensor's resistance is low and the PCM will see a high temperature. The PCM expects to see slow resistance changes on the ECT signal circuit. If it sees a quick change in voltage that isn't consistent with an engine warming up, this P0116 code will set. Or if it sees a lack of change in ECT signal, this code may set.

Symptoms

There may be no noticeable symptoms if the problem is very intermittent, however the following may occur:

MIL (Malfunction Indicator Lamp) illumination
Poor drivability
Black smoke at tailpipe
Poor fuel economy
May not idle
May exhibit stalling or misfires

Causes

Potential causes of the P0116 code include:

Missing or stuck-open thermostat
Bad ECT sensor
Short or open on signal wire
Short or open on ground wire
Poor connections in wiring

Possible Solutions

If there are any other ECT sensor codes, diagnose them first.

Using a scan tool, check the ECT reading. On a cold engine, it should match the IAT reading or should be equal to ambient (outside) temperature reading. If it does match the IAT or ambient temp, check the freeze frame data on your scan tool (if equipped). The saved data should tell you what the ECT reading was when the fault occurred.

a) If the saved info indicates that the engine coolant reading was at the coldest exreme (around -30 deg. F) then that's a good indication the ECT resistance was intermittently high (unless you live in Anchorage!) Check for an open in the ECT sensor ground and signal circuits and repair as necessary. If they appear okay, warm the engine up while monitoring the ECT for any intermittent jumps high or low. If there are replace the ECT.

b) If the saved info indicates that the engine coolant reading was at the warmest exreme (around 250+ deg.F) then that's a good indication the ECT resistance was intermittently low. Check for a short to ground on the signal circuit and repair as necessary. If it appears okay, warm the engine up while monitoring the ECT for any intermittent jumps high or low. If there are replace the ECT.

HO2S Heater Control Circuit Low (Bank 1 Sensor 2)
What does that mean?

Heated Oxygen sensors (HO2S) are inputs used by the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) to determine oxygen content in the exhaust system. Bank 1, sensor 2 refers to the second sensor back on bank 1. The PCM uses the information gained from the Bank 1,2 HO2S mainly to monitor the efficiency of the catalytic converter. Integral to this sensor is a heater element

The PCM controls this heater to warm up the sensor to operating temperature. This allows the engine to enter closed loop faster and reduces emissions on cold startup. The PCM continuously monitors the heater circuits for abnormal voltages or in some cases, even amperages. Depending on the make of vehicle, the Oxygen sensor heater is controlled one of two ways. One way is that the PCM directly controls the voltage feed to the heater either directly or via a HO2S relay and a ground is supplied from the vehicle's common ground. The other way would be a fused 12 volt Battery feed (B+) that feeds 12 volts to the heater element anytime the ignition is on and the control of the heater is done by a driver in the PCM which controls the ground side of the heater circuit.

Finding out which one you have is important because the PCM activates the heater under various circumstances. If the PCM detects an abnormally low voltage condition on the heater circuit, P0037 may set.

Symptoms

Symptoms of a P0037 DTC may include:

Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) illumination
There will likely be no other symptoms

Causes

Potential causes of a P0037 trouble code may include:

Bank 1,2 oxygen sensor heater element has failed
Physical damage to heated oxygen sensor has occurred
Control circuit (or voltage feed, depending on system) is shorted to ground
PCM Oxygen sensor heater driver has failed

Possible Solutions

Do a visual inspection of the Bank 1,2 HO2S and wiring harness. If there is any damage to the sensor or any damage to the wiring, repair/replace as needed. Make sure wiring is routed away from exhaust. If all appears okay, unplug the Bank 1,2 HO2S and verify that there is 12 volts B+ present with the key on engine off, (or ground is present, depending on the system).

Verify the heater control (ground) circuit is intact. If so, remove the o2 sensor and inspect for damage. If you have access to resistance specifications you can use a Ohmmeter to perform a resistance test of the heater element. Infinite resistance indicates an open in the heater. Replace the o2 sensor as necessary.

Hi,my chevrolet trial blazer 2004 rpm is not going above 3000 rpm while in park or neutral and my gear is not shifting smoothly.

Hi and welcome to FixYa!

Few things can cause this issue. It can be a disconnected vacuum hose somewhere so please have a good look at it. It can be a faulty TPS (throttle position sensor) too. If the TPS is faulty the throttle response tends to fail so you will need to have it replaced. Regarding the shifting, I strongly suggest that you replace the automatic transmission fluid. If the fluid is burnt, the shifting tends to be rough and may shift only on high rpm.

Once the fluid is replaced, a smooth ride and shifting will be noticeable. Please have the following be checked to resolve the issue.

Have a good one and thank you for using FixYa!

03 dodge caravan, 105,000 miles, 2.4L transmission will shift in all gears but will not go into overdrive from 3rd gear. when it does shift to overdrive i try to speed up on the gas and it shifts back into...

I'm afraid that the transmission's O/D solenoid malfunctioning or kick down cable may be misadjusted if so equipped.

looking at a rebuilt transmission if you plan to keep the Caravan.

Or, alternatively, could get a low mileage transmission from a salvage yard and have it installed.

Servos/Accumulators The servos are hydraulic pistons and cylinders. They resemble the hydraulic actuators used on many other machines, such as bulldozers. Hydraulic fluid enters the cylinder, under pressure, and forces the piston to move to engage the band or clutches.
Servo operation tccs7015.gif

The accumulators are used to cushion the engagement of the servos. The transmission fluid must pass through the accumulator on the way to the servo. The accumulator housing contains a thin piston, which is sprung away from the discharge passage of the accumulator. When fluid passes through the accumulator on the way to the servo, it must move the piston against spring pressure, and this action smoothes out the action of the servo.
Hydraulic Control System The hydraulic pressure used to operate the servos comes from the main transmission oil pump. This fluid is channeled to the various servos through the shift valves. There is generally a manual shift valve, which is operated by the transmission selector lever, and a shift valve for each up shift the transmission provides.
Most automatic transmissions are electronically controlled; electrical solenoids are used to control the hydraulic fluid. The shift solenoids are regulated by an electronic control module. Shift timing is regulated through sensor feedback information provided to the electronic controller.
On older transmissions there are two pressures that control the shift valves. One is the governor pressure which is affected by vehicle speed. The other is the modulator pressure which is affected by intake manifold vacuum or throttle position. Governor pressure rises with an increase in vehicle speed, and modulator pressure rises as the throttle is opened wider. By responding to these two pressures, the shift valves cause the up shift points to be delayed with increased throttle opening to make the best use of the engine's power output.
Older transmissions also make use of an auxiliary circuit for downshifting. This circuit may be actuated by the throttle linkage, vacuum that actuates the modulator, or by a cable or solenoid. It applies pressure to the downshift surface on the shift valve or valves.
The transmission modulator also governs the line pressure, used to actuate the servos. In this way, the clutches and bands will be actuated with a force matching the torque output of the engine.

When i put my car into drive it jerks forward suddenly and when i put it in reverse it jerks backward also. its never done this before

1. Extremely harsh shifts from P or N, normal shifts at WOT: EPC (Electronic Pressure Control) solenoid failed. Easy fix in pan. Fix as soon as possible or hard parts will eventually break.
2. Shift suddenly become very hard. When going from park to either reverse or drive it slams into gear. 1-2 and 2-3 shifts are also harsh. All gears seems to work. Problem may be intermittent: Check TPS for smooth electrical response. If the response is jumpy or erratic at all, replace TPS.
There are two thing that may be happening that you have described, but you can tell which one it will be since your driving the Blazer. Both are simple to repaire, but to change the EPC. Your going to have to drop the transmission pan so that's going to be a transmission shop and call around, the EPC can be replace the same time there draining the transmission fluid when servicing the transmission which is about $110.00 for fluid and filter replacement and additional $65.00-$80.00 for the EPC valve.
EPC (electronic pressure control) valve TPS (Throttle position sensor)
Thank you for using Fixya and good luck. If it's the EPC failure, replace as soon as possible. may casue the sunshell to fractured or splines to sheared off.

Shifting out of first takes longer and feels rough

1-2 shift is delayed and harsh, may not shift into OD: Check TPS for smooth and linear electrical response over the entire range of motion. If not, replace.

Extremely harsh shifts from P or N, normal shifts at WOT: EPC (Electronic Pressure Control) solenoid failed. Easy fix in pan. Fix as soon as possible or hard parts will eventually break.

Visit a transmission shop and have them put a line pressure gauge on the pressure test port and go for a drive to verify proper line pressure. Base pressure at idle in P,N,OD should be around 70psi and around 140psi in R. Max line pressure should be at least 190psi at WOT in 1st or 2nd, 225psi is optimum. If base pressure is low, trans or pump is worn out. If max pressure is low, check EPC solenoid. If reverse is slow to engage, and line pressure does not come up to at least 130psi in reverse, replace the boost valve with a Transgo 0.500" boost valve (easy fix in pan).

Here is just a few things that are common to what you have described, I would start checking the Wire leads to the TPS and TPS it self. Good luck and keep me posted, be glad to know you got your Transmission running 100% again.

When trans. is warm after extended driving the up shifts are very hard. This only happens during extended driving periods. Around town everything shifts fine.

Problem may be intermittent: Check Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) for smooth electrical response. If the response is jumpy or erratic at all, replace TPS. Good luck Auto Zone or Parts Source has this part and can be replaced with in 20 min. Both parts store will have the step by step instructions and i believe the cost is around $65.00 for the TPS which is better then a transmission replacement.
