1980 trans am 5.0. won't keep an idle. what should i do. where is the idle adjustment?

The idle adjustment is located at the throttle plates, but consider having a mechanic look at it, as you may need mixture adjustment, or have vac leaks....

How to adjust a Quadra jet carberator on a small block Chevy.

Hello, It's been a long time since I have adjusted a Quadra Jet. Start the engine and bring it up to running temperature. Make sure the choke is fully off. At idle , turn the right hand idle mixture screw in until you hear or feel the engine start to miss. Back out the idle mixture screw 1/4 turn. Repeat procedure for the left hand idle mixture screw. Adjust idle speed screw to 800 RPM for auto trans in gear or 700 rpm manual trans in neutral.

Timing and sparks plug gap 1980 gm 454

Timing 6 degrees before TDC vacuum hose disconnected from vacuum advance. Idle @ 600rpm auto trans. and 700rpm
for std. trans. Plug gap .035 non HEI ignition, point dwell 28-32 degrees or .019 gap with feeler gauge on high lobe point open. Timing can vary a few degrees depending on cam and fuel. Also point setting changes timing. Go back and check each reading as you change one the others change. (example: increase timing, rpms also go up) All settings made with vacuum hose off advance and plugged.Hope this helps good luck.

My 1980 mgb overdrive shifts fine cold when it reaches operating won't shift up or down.

Solenoid coil warms up and dissipates too much voltage with age and needs replacing. Bottom of overdrive unit. Sometimes cleaning and adjusting can help extend their life a bit.

Sorry but our detailed info doesn't go back to this old of a car. But this what I know from experiences in my early career. If it has a carburetor I suggest you tune up the engine and rebuild the carburetor as it is likely the cause. This all assumes the engine runs smoothly and is not misfiring. Also check engine compression on all cylinders, they should be no more than 5% difference fro the highest pressure reading to the lowest.

Hello I have a 1980 Ford Bronco 351 2bbl. Wondering if anyone knows which screws adjust what? Please if anyone has any ideas please respond. Thank you.

Here are some images that might help to assist you, and let me know if you require any further assistance.

Adjust the curb idle with the engine warmed up and the choke off.


The air/fuel mixture screws should be adjusted with the engine warmed up and at normal idle speed, then turn each air/fuel mixture screw in one at a time until the engine just begins to mis-fire, then back the air/fuel mixture screw out 1-1/2 to 2 turns out a half a turn at a time until the engine idle is the smoothest. (your vehicle might have restrictor caps over the air/fuel mixture screws to limit the amount of adjustment)



The choke adjustments;



To adjust the vacuum tension pull on the choke pull-off:


Adjust the fast idle screw to the proper RPM with the engine cold and the choke on.

1980 Trans am original 4.9 engine. I messed up fuel and air screw

Screw each one in all they way, and then back them out two and a half times, then start it up and then ajust each until it runs smooth.

I recently swapped my tranny. its a super t 10 4 speed, it worked fine when i pulled it from the 1980 camaro, iput it in my other 1980 and now my transmission wont go in any of the gears, it will go into...

Did you adjust the shift rods from the shifter to the trans shift arms. Take your shift rods loose and put shifter in neutral, and transmission arms in neutral, then adjust the rods so they slide in. Then your shifter matches your transmission and you should be able to shift just fine.
