Question about 2006 Chevrolet Avalanche

1 Answer

My 06 chevy avalanche has been driving fine no problems for the year we have owned it. Yesterday my husband went to leave, backed out of the driveway and put it in drive and it acted like it was in neutral. He put it in park and it made a loud grinding noise. Put it back into drive and it drove fine for about half a mile the acted like in neutral again. I started it this morning and it idled fine for a few mins. Put it into reverse and it made a grinding noise. Back into park and a louder grinding noise. Whats wrong??

SOURCE: Will not go into reverse/05 chev avalanche

chances are you have a transmission problem. If its just reving it means the transmission isn't catching. I would take it to a transmission specialist right away and be sure to call the seller. I would ask for your money back or have the seller pay for the repair cost, which may be a lot. Advice for the future: Always test drive the vehicle so you don't get ripped off.

SOURCE: reverse acts as neutral. (auto tranny)

It is hard to say, but as long as all of the forward gears work fine, then it might work for a long time. But without knowing what is wrong, I would at least change the fluid to remove as much metal or clutch material as you can. Don't worry about the filter, you can't change it without disassembling the trans. Just drain the fluid and refill it. This won't fix reverse, but it might prolong further problems. And don't park where you can't pull straight out.

SOURCE: 94 v6 camaro automatic.. no reverse or neutral.

Sounds like you may have burned out the reverse clutch pack inside the transmission by going from drive to reverse. I would recommend seeing a transmission shop for verification. Hope this helps

You have a 4L60E whick is controled by your ECM. It sounds like you need and new transmission, the sun gear in it has failed and is the weak point on this transmission.
When you get a new transmission have them to a corvette servo upgrade. The part is only $45.00 and the shop should know about the upgrade. It will make your truck shift a lot more firmer but last longer.
Here is a write up http://s-series.org/component/option,com_tech_article/Itemid,/item,6/task,item/
Good luck and hope this helps

I have a growling noise also that no dealer has been able to fix.

GM isnt any better with my 04 avalanche. the intermediate steering shaft keeps crapping out on me at $250 for replacement. Its a known problem but no recall has been issued. they did tell me that the noise it makes isnt a problem, it wont fail it is just annoying. you dont say. Anyway, the moral of the story is I went back to Ford. I have a 00 Expedition (used), 98 Lincoln Mark VIII) used and a 70 mustang. the mustang graduated to the third garage and the P.O.S. chevy sits in the driveway.

    good luck with your problem.

    2003 Avalanch fuel gage

You have a problem with the stepper motor gauge that Chevy used in the 02-06? Avalanche. All the gauges use the same stepper motor. They just go wonky and do all kinds of weird things. I have replaced two on mine already and two more are now acting up. There is a guy selling the motors and the repair for this problem on E-bay.
