This is not the cat but indeed the silencer(aka muffler) It can be welded back into place as it is most likely the exhaust pipe that has broken off because of rust. Bear in mind that if that is the case it will probably need replacement anyway.
If the pipe is intact then check the holder brackets. The pipe is suspended from the underside of the vehicle by way of rubber mountings which hook onto brackets on the pipe and vehicle body. They can be purchsed at your local parts store and are relatively easy to replace.

Rattle from car at 1900revs only when in gear

moving noise is very hard to find.

could well be exhaust shields,
did you take a rubber mallet and tap the parts (exh, end to end?)
bang ,rattle, bang , repeat
seen many bad CAT (brick inside loose) rattle. hit it. bingo. there you go.

i also jam objects in cat shelds to stop them for making noise.
just for temporary to find source.

I have a 96 Toyota Tercel 4 speed manual car. When I pull off it makes a rattling noise that comes from the front end. When I press the gas it makes the noise but when I am shifting gears the noise...

rattling noise from front, first rule out any loose heath shield check exhaust system, and also your engine mounts when given gas your engine shifs under torque and when you let off the gas to shift engine moves back(no load, torque) if loose or broken mounts may cause interierence on moving parts(binding). do this firts good luck

Rattle noice engine around the calelitic converter. rattle noice when starting car up when cold. poor gas mileage.

Sounds like you may have a exhaust loose or either the cat converter is stopping up. Some of these have baffles inside which will break loose and cause a rattling noise. When the engine is cold, start the vehicle and crawl under and hold the converter with your hand and even the exhaust to see if any pressure will stop the or alter the noise. Careful it don't take long for the exhaust to heat up. If these baffles are broke inside, it can cause the converter to become stopped up and rattle, this will also give an engine false info when it comes to the fuel and air ratio mixture. Not going to far into it, so i don't confuse you. Good Luck

Rattle noise when I let go of the accelerator. The faster I go and then slow down, the louder the rattle noise

Have a look at the shrouds around your exhaust system, they are prone to shaking loose and rattle on over run.
Try giving your exhaust a bang ( with your hand when it is cold) and see if it causes the noise . Follow the noise.
Sometimes the baffles fall off inside the muffler and rattle around inside too.
Happy hunting!!

Could be something jumping around in the exhaust. Is your catalytic conv in that area?

Loud noise

Check your exhaust and rear suspension for something loose or broken. Problem could be the exhaust, a hanger or cracked pipe. In the suspension it could be shocks, worn bushings, track arms etc. When a problem like this happens you have to get under the car and grab and try to move things checking for loosness. In general try to see what is loose enough that a bump causes it to rattle or bang. Other than inspecting the rear area there is no short cut that can be taken to solve the problem. You don't want to just start replacing parts hoping to fix the problem, that can be expxnsive and unnecessary. Good Luck!!!

Rattling noise from front near alternator

Hi.
I think the problem is the power take off for the front fan ,steering etc. Underneath the middle of the car you will see what looks like a small propshaft pointing towards the front with a doughnut shapped mounting bolted to each end. These rubber joints wear and rattle on tick over or low revs cost is about £40 for the 2 from Japarts
Takes about 2 hours to change.Hope this helps Good luck

Rattling noise in rear

could be coming from 3 spots
1 engine mounts = mounts go bad try shaking the motor when its cold to see if you can hear it
2 brakes = sometimes brake hardware can come loose or rust away mo so in brake drums in the back
3 exhaust shield = there is a thin shield around parts of the exhaust while it cold shake the tail pipe to see if you hear it

Rattling noise coming from front & back

Matt, sounds like a suspension or exhaust noise. Grab onto exhaust (engine cold) at several locations (car supported securely so u don't get crushed) and wiggle, tug pull, kick, etc to see if u can get it to make any noise from hitting anything. Look for evidence of the exhaust rubbing against something, by looking for shiny metal due to contact w/ something. Also push up and down on the body of the car as violently as possible to simulate going over bumps. Pay close attention to heat shields around or on the exhaust system, if they are loose, they will make a racket.
And, as I said, possibly the suspension is making the noise, but not as likely, pushing up and down on the car body as described above might reproduce the noise. If it isn't the exhaust (my 1st choice), give me more clues if u can. good luck countrycurt0
