The battery is in a box under the hood on the driver's side, right in front of the air filter box. Be sure if replacing to replace with proper battery for a diesel engine.

Warning light

Check all of your fluid levels. Top them off one at a time and see which level turns the light out.

What oil type do I use...2003 vw beetle?

if U live in a cold climate use 5W-30W, if u live in a moderate climate with hot summers use 10W-30W, any name brand meets your engines requirements. Do not use any oils heavier than these two, it can cause engine bearing damage.

Over heating

As a general rule with a modern VW TDI, if it isn't running properly go and get the engine fault codes read by a properly equipped garage. If your usual garage doesn't have the correct equipment I'd recommend finding one that does.

There are so many things that could be wrong that guessing is usually a waste of time, so "get the codes read" :-)

My '96 Passat TD (not a TDI) overheated last week and the battery light came on - it was a failed alternator belt which drives both the alternator and the water pump.

Hope this helps, D.
