Actually, the newer ('05+) Duratec motors have a sealed airbox. There is a meter on the side of it (positioned just behind the driver side headlight.) To qualify as a Partial Zero Emission vehicle all emissions parts are required to last for 100k miles. 100k miles is when Ford recommends replacing it. Yes... you replace the ENTIRE airbox. Often times it's more cost effective to replace the unit with a traditional cold air induction kit (~$150) with a more traditional air filter.

If the check engine light is on, there is a problem that the computer has detected and you need to retrieve the code(s) to find out what it is. You will need an OBD II code reader, or in some states your local auto parts store will do it for free. Since the light can come on for a wide variety of reasons, I am not going to make a guess as to what the issue is.
