Open Question

Have a 1998 gmc 3500 sierra 4 wheel drive automatic. I drove the truck to a job ran fine trans shifted fine left it there for about a month. When I drove it home it kept shifting up and down would not stop. Can not drive for fear of damaging the transmission. is there kind of relay or electrical switch that would cause this if not what.

the connections near the front axle that activate the motor to engage the system aren't melted? That's a comon problem for that body style. If there good, sounds like it could be that motor itself. To figure out if it's you motor or transfercase, jack up the rear end, have a friend inside shift into 4 wheel drive, or try to, and put it in gear and apply some gas. If the front driveshaft is turning then it's something with the front end. If not, farther back in the system.

rec check fluid first. If trans fluid hasn't been changed in last 30,000 miles change fluid, filter and pan gasket. At that time inspect for foreign materials in bottom of pan or on magnet if you have one. If truck has over 100K and fluid was never changed you may have more problems if changing the fluid.

1998 gmc sierra 1500... it is an automatic and I put it in drive and it will let me drive but won't switch gears and my speedometer wont work?

You have a faulty speed sensor. It is located it at the rear left of the transmission. If it is a four wheel drive, it is located at the tailshaft of the transfercase.
