5W-40 at least semisynthetic. The recommended brand is Mobil1 but all good brands will work just as good.

How to troubleshoot a high pitched whine in the right fron side of my Nissan Maxima 2004

Could be one of the belts slipping or worn out. Might even be the water pump bearing. Does the whine increase/decrease as you rev? Whine louder if you suddenly accelerate?

2004 nissan maxima engine code p0021&p1135. Intake valve timing control solenoid has already been replaced. What else could cause this?

I think I answered this a couple of weeks ago on a different Nissan. Both codes are saying the computer can not control valve timing on bank two.
There is a solenoid that uses engine oil flow to adjust valve timing.
If the sensors and solenoid are good, the problem could be lack of oil reaching the solenoid, or a problem with the wiring harness.

Nissan tech explained that I have sludge in my 2004 nissan maxima engine and that I need a new engine. What are your thoughts?

There are no hard and fast rules for curing an engine of sludge buildup. If it's really bad, flushing the engine might be the only cure.

If you do decide to do an oil flush, first drain your engine of all it's oil, but leave the old oil filter in place. Next fill it up with flushing oil and run it at a fast idle for about 20 minutes. Finally, drain all this off (and marvel at the **** that comes out with it), replace the oil filter, refill with a good synthetic oil and voila! Clean engine

Ticking noice

If your not already, try using a genuine Nissan oil filter next time you get your oil changed. Most aftermarket filters allow the oil to drain back so when you start up cold the filter is in essence dry and not primed most likely causing the noise your experiencing. This would be the first thing I would reccommend checking.
