Question about 1995 GMC Suburban

1 Answer

Engine revs perfect to 2500 RPM then chokes out will not run past that rpm. While driving it will not go over 2000 rpm. I changed the plugs, wires, checked all of the vaccum lines even checked for blockage in the cat and muffler. Could it be the Egr valve or any other sensors? The engine runs perfect until it hits that rpm then it just stops reving

Remove your fuel filter and blow through it. Replace as necessary. It may be necessary to check fuel pressure while in operation to verify a drop in pressure. Warm the engine for about 10 minutes and take for a hard test drive around the block and see if that catalytic converter is glowing red(I know you said you checked it). Replace as necessary. Something is plugged. Let me know what you find.

I think you are on the right track with a tune up. Replace the wires, air filter and oil as well. I also would run a cleaner through the fuel lines. An STP or a Lucas would be better.

While your car is running.......pop the hood and find the throttle body. The throttle body is where your air filter tube/hose goes to the engine. Locate the throttle position sensor which should be on the side of the metal throttle body. This should be the item causing this. If you grab the plug that is on the sensor and wiggle it while the car is running then the engine should rev and act up if thats the problem. If not let me know and I can direct you further. Thanks.

Check engine light on. Will not rev up over 2500 rpm. Fluctuates between 2000 and 2500 rpm and runs rough. Upon first start, you can rev fine and it runs smooth as long as you hold the rpms over 3000. ...

Hi, there are a lot of things that could cause this behavior, so it would help us to diagnose your problem if you could get a scan of the OBD2 connector and send us the trouble code. If you live in the US you can usually get a free scan at your local parts chain.

My 1987 turbo toyota supra will only rev up to 2500 rpm then cut out like a governer. when it drops to about 2000 rpm it will rev back up only to 2500 rpm. at an idle it runs rough

The throttle position sensor has an idle switch in it that tells the car's computer that the throttle is positioned at idle. If the idle switch sticks in the idle position, the computer will not allow the engine to rev more than 2500 rpm. In your case, I think the switch is stuck.

First, see if you can get the trouble codes to come up. Rig a jumper wire and jump between the "T" terminal and the "E1" terminal in the car's "Diagnostics" box. It is a small black box on the driver's side of the engine compartment near the battery. Open the lid and on the inside of the lid it has a map of the terminals.

Once you hook up the jumper wire, turn the ignition switch to on but do not start the car. If there are codes, the check engine light (orange) will blink the 2 digit code. It blinks the first digit, pauses, then blinks the second digit. The code for the throttle position sensor is code "41". That is, four blinks...pause...then one blink. If this code comes up, change the throttle position sensor. (If there are no codes, the check engine light will steadily blink once per second until you turn the key to off.) Don't forget to remove the jumper wire when you are finished.
