hi . do u need any special tools & do u need to take any other parts off to get @ the rack. or does it just unbolt & come out easily? thks

  • luckyleprico Sep 05, 2010

that is i kind of thought, that something else would have to come out. there is not much room under there!! how many bolts does the cross member have & is it easy to get out.

You won't need any special tools. Just as long as you got the standard tools and jack stands to secure the car you'll be good. You may need to remove the cross member to make way for the steering rack.

Actually its gonna be pretty tough. 2 bolts in front and 2 bolts on the rear. You will need to get the transmission bolts off too so you will really need atleast 3 jackstands to support the engine not unless you got a boom.

Change power steering fluid hose s do i need 2 bleed still hard 2 steer

Yes but you must first empty rack and replace fluid with new fluid. Old fluid may have broken down and turn into a watery substance. This will not permit proper functioning and may clog new pump and lines.
Hope this helps

Diy fix leak power steering

You have the steering pump, steering hoses
steering rack-- I guess
Somewhat easy to see & get at, except to replace
a rack, that most likely is leaking. Check behind the bellows
by outer tie rods for oil
I would change the rack & put on all new hoses on a car
that old
You can pretty much know what is shot on a car that age
Your going to need to do suspension bushings, ball joints & all
to have a safe car
Pretty much a restoration project of the complete front end
Every time you run low on fluid you wear out the steering pump
a little more & have the groaning noise & part of it is a failed
steering rack that has worn & tightened up also

2003 honda accord 2.4 power stering hard, replace pump got little softer but still hard

The steering is controlled by the steering rack,
& they get stiff because no one changes the fluid
every 3 years

The upper strut bearings fail & make steering stiff

Doubt the pump was a problem at all

Steering is stiff & difficult during turns.have used power steering fluid.2001 suzuki vitara xl7 v6 4dr

Its either the power steering pump, or the rack & pinion, (steering gear). It is only going to get worse, and maybe even dangerous, as the steering will jam and not turn. Have it inspected by someone you trust....soon! If it is the rack & pinion it may cost around $500 to have it replaced. Make sure that price includes the required front-end alignment. It will drive like new afterwards!!

2002 mercury sable power steering hard to turn left or right has new power steering pump no leaks no sounds just hard to turn hardest when slow moving and parking

Bad steering rack, or bad spoolvalve,in rack. leaky pressure between cylinder & piston in the rack. Check A/C PRESSURE SWITCH,UNPLUG SEE IF CHANGES POWER STEERING EFFORTS.

Where is the power steering hose? on a 2001 pontiac montana

The power steering hose, goes down under the power steering pump,it goes directly down from the pump, and cuts under the engine to the rack and pinion, both hoses do.If this was helpful, please rate, thank you.

Added new power steering fluid to the old now my steering is hard

First question is : Was the fluid added marked as poere steering fluid? If so, it's odd that the steering would suddenly become hard. What I would do is disconnect the return line (the one that has a hose clamp on it, not a pressure fitting)
Drain the system there and refill with fresh fluid. Since the fluid has not been changed, you may want to do this twice after running it for a few minutes between changes. If this does not restore proper operation then the pump or steering rack has an internal problem and will need to be diagnosed by someone with experience.

Power steering acts like its low on fluid at an idle. Rack & pinion & pump are a year old. I have an inline filter installed. Removed filter to see if it was pluged, no difference. Plenty of fluid...

Was it a reman pump and rack? You most likely have a problem with the pump again. If it is hard to steer both ways, it will be the pump. If it is hard to steer only one way, it will be the rack.

I have a 2001 toyota celica. i put a new power steering pump on it because the old one was moaning and of course the car was difficult to turn. but.. the new is doing the same thing and blowing the fliud...

Sound like the steering rack is bad.The moaning could be the pump working to hard which could cause the fluid to overheat and over flow.Does it over flow when you first start it and it is cold
