Question about 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee

2 Answers

1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee; 5.2 L. V-8 Engine. When the engine is hot, particularly in hot weather, and the engine is shut down for aprox. 10 to 20 minutes this happens: Upon engine re-start, it runs very rough, acts like it is experiencing vapor lock and running on only half the numbers of cylinders. The exhust gas smoke smells like unburned fuel. After the car sputters down the road for a few minutes and the engine gets air circulation, it again returns to normal operation. What is the permanant solution to this recurring problem?

According to the Service Manual, There is no "Mass Air Flow Sensor". However there is a "Manifold Absolute Pressure Sensor" or (MAP). I did have the "MAP" replaced about a month ago but the problem did not go away.
Next I will follow the directions as published in the manual which is to inspect all wire connections to the Oxygen Sensor, Park/Neutral Switch, Vehicle Speed Sensor and Fuel Pump/Gauge Sensor.
Thank you for your attempt even though it was not helpful.

Hi! Looks pretty much a MAF (mass air flow) sensor issue. The MAF has big contribution on engine performance specially on the idle and vacuum supply. When the MAF is faulty you can experience an unusual idling, rough riding and sudden stalling. Once the MAF is replaced you'll be good. Hope this helps and thank you for using Fixya!

My 1994 Jeep grand cherokee starts n idles but then dies.

Engine stall or RPM fluctuates at idle.

This problem is commonly caused by a dirty automatic idle speed control valve and throttle valve. Buy a can of throttle valve cleaner (do not use carburetor spray cleaner!) from NAPA or Carquest (made by CRC chemicals) and spray it into the air intake while the engine is running, use up about 1/2 the can, engine will try to stall hold the speed up, shut it down and let it soak for 30 minutes, restart and blow out the remaining fluid, shut it down and disconnect the negative battery cable for 5 Min's to reset the base idle control

2000 jeep grand cherokee will not start tempture gage reads hot

This is a safety system built into a Grand cherokee. If it gets hot or loses oil pressure it will shut itself down to prevent engine damage. If it hasn't been started and it reads hot I would say your coolant temperature sensor for the gauge has gone bad and needs to be replaced. They are fairly inexpensive and not to hard to replace.

I am driving down the road and for no reason the engine stalls

Hi BigJoe,

Have you had any issues with your keys/ignition?

I have a Cherokee and a Wrangler. The Cherokee's ignition switch started getting flaky a while back. Sort of doing what you describe.

On mine, engine would die, dash lights out, like the ignition was turned off.

I'd give the tilt a bang and everything was back to normal. I got a replacement at a junk yard for $5.00.

The key symptom is, do the dash lights go out when the engine dies?

If not, disregard.

Mike
