There should be a plastic piece under the steering column, by your lap, take the cover piece off. And put your thumb in the hole and poke around until you feel a button that should release the key! This is an answer given to another driver of a cobalt. See if this helps. Otherwise, pull out your manual and look for key release button.

2006 chevy cobalt LT. the key is stuck

Have you tried shifting the gears completely through and then putting the car in park. It sounds like the car isn't able to be put completely in park to release the key. Try putting the car in N and removing the key. Even thought the car may not completely be in park to release the key, The gear most likely is in park but not enough to make the switch/sensor to release.

Are you using the original key that came with the car? The chip in that key may have gone bad. Try using the spare key that should have come with the purchase of the car. You may also be having battery issues. If all else fails....call the people who really know how to rape you...DUM Dum dummmmm....the dealer

Can't remove key

I have not had this issue on my Cobalt, but I did encounter it on my 1997 Chevy Blazer.

There is a shift lock interchange that doesn't allow the car to shift unless the brake pedal is pressed in, and won't allow the ignition to be turned fully off if the car is not in park.

To remove my key I used to shift from Park to Drive repeatedly attempting to get the switch to lock in place. While it was very annoying, it eventually worked and the key was able to come out.
