My 94 volvo 850 stops while driving. If I try to start it directly after it has stopped occasionally it will start, if it does not start right after it has died, I have to wait 30 min to an hour. It does start after waiting, but the problem persist through driving. I don't know what it is, please help!!!!!

Thank you very much for your assist. I changed the ignition coil this morning along with the coil wire, but the problem continues. I also cleaned all electric connection points. The car does start quicker but continues to stall when hot or driving. The times that it has stopped I have to get out remove the coil connection and the sensor connection wait for a bit then restart it, this process is highly annoying.

I have a 94 Volvo 850. It has begun to stop while driving, and is often very hard to start following. When it stops either it will immediately start back up, or it will have to sit for 30 min to an hour before it starts again, and even then sometimes it still dies. I have changed the ignition coil-sensor-wire, and have cleaned all electrical connections but the problem persist. What can it be?

Multiple possible problems, too many to solve on-line just for $4 but the most obvious outside of basic maintenance like filters, plugs and wires would be the ignition coil

It is a bad coil. The coil is exactly what it says. A coil of copper wire. When wire heats up it expands and shrinks back when it cools. When you drive your car, the coil gets hot and the wire inside the coil expands and breaks connection. When it cools back off then it shrinks back and makes connection again. 99 times out of 100 the coil is the problem with these symptoms.

If this helps PLEASE check four thumbs up! Thanks!!!

Something I should have suggested first. Is take the car to Autozone and have them put it on their computer. It is free and it will tell you the codes and what they mean. Also they will sell you the parts to fix the problem. I would have suggested it in the first place, but the problem is like I said 99% of the time the coil.

Have the dealer look for soft codes and to check the connections to the starter and the battery and to check the alternator for proper charging. Volvo alternators have a circuit inside of them that when it goes bad it will cause the car to stop running without warning.

My Volvo 94 850 odometer stop working, I bought

There are actually two gears that you need to replace, a large one and then smaller one that rides inside it. You can purchase them both at www.fcpgroton.com These can also sometimes affect the operation of your speedometer. Do you by chance have an ABS and TRACS light on? If so the speedometer issue may be related to your ABS controller.

Hi there,

M ycar had the same problem and changing the Fuel Pump Relay fixed it. it is found on the fuse box, but you have to remove the cover. There are 5-6 torx bolts, remove the cover and it is the part that has a 103 on the top, it is red.

Hope this helps,

Safety switch in transmission ?

Your Gear Position Sensor is failing. It's common on these models for this part to fail. It's common for the check engine light to also come on and store a code for this sensor.

Clear your engine and transmission codes, its a small box in the pass side engine compartment right behind the headlight. Search "Bay 13 Volvo" and that has all the information to check and clear the codes. It also has a list of what the codes mean to help you.
