Question about 1987 Ford Ranger

1 Answer

87FordRanger 5spd 2.9l. Bad starter. Truck sat for month and a half with very little gas. Changed starter for rebuilt. Put in gas. Motor turned over, but no start. Tried a few more times. No start. Last time tried and starter wouldn't disengage or stop going when key removed. Battery now dead. Put Methyl into tank to deal with possible condensation, but truck won't turn over with dead battery. Don't know what to do/try next.

Your starter solenoid stuck on. (This may be internal to the starter). You need to replace the solenoid (or starter), then get the battery charged, and try again. If this has a carburetor (rather than fuel injection), you may need to prime it with starter fluid or a little gas in the throat of the carb (put the air filter assembly back on before you try to start it, you don't want to start a fire).

    Dear Guru,
It is a new (rebuilt) starter. Darn. Gunked injectors (I wish it was a carb)? Fuel pump (oh god no/fuse, maybe)? Will try again. Thanks, Danna.

If the motor will not turn over check voltage at the starter you should have 12 volts and if you do then your starter is bad.If you don't have 12 volts at the starter than check your ignition switch and starter relay.

make sure wires are clean and tight and battery is fully charged and posts are clean and tight, check starter by bumping it(turning key on and touching a RUBBER handled screwdriver across pos and neg bolts on back of starter)but be CAREFUL this will cause sparks and damage the screwdriver if starter does not turn its not getting juice,or just bad or not fitting right.

My truck sat for four months now it won't start.

it likley to be blocked jets,,,try tipping a drop of gas ie:10cc,,only into each plug hole then try starting it up, if it just bursts into life and cuts out again its all down to no gas getting to the engine,,,also engines do dry out if left standing around so the drop of gas will lube the pistons as well

You will need to check fuel pressure first off. It sounds like the fuel system is bleeding off after you shut the truck off. The most common points of bleed off is the fuel pump and the fuel pressure regulator.
Also with all of the time it has sat you may need to run all of the gas you have out of it and fill it up with freash fuel!
