Question about 1998 Plymouth Neon

2 Answers

My 1998 plymouth neon expresso - dash board cluster gauges: the speedometor, gas gauge, and rpm gauge sometimes work and other times do not. If you turn the ignition on to accessories but not on to start the car, and then wait 10 to 30 seconds, then start the car, most times the gauges work. If you turn the to start the without waiting, the gauges do not work. The 1st time this happen, I change the fuse in the fuse box and they work for a while. Is this a electrical problem or a sensor problem?

I was reading about the same issue and i think we will all have to get a new cluster gage or whatever
there is a way to fix it yourself if you can
using a soldering gun

Sounds like an intermittent loss of power to the instrument cluster to me. Remove the instrument cluster and inspect the electrical connectors on the back of the cluster.

I have a 1998 neon and my speed, temp, and gas gauges work sometimes and aometimes they don't. is something loose?

your dash cluster is bad. It is cause by a cold soder in the cluster itself. If you know how to soder and can find a cold soder you can take it apart and fix it. Or you will have to get a different cluster. If you get a used one make sure it come with some type or warrany cause it is a very common problem on neons and the chance of getting a bad one is pretty good .

There have been several issues with the instrument clusters in the Voyagers and Caravans. The circuit board can have cold solders at the plug connection causing an intermittent failure of the instruments. The fix is to remove the trim under the dash, around the steering wheel and in front of the cluster. This can be done with just a phillips screwdriver and some patience. Once this is out of the way there are 4 screws that hold in the cluster. Remove the cluster, and with a low temp solder gun, heat the solder points where the plug connects until they are liquid and reset themselves. Reassemble the cluster and check them before you put the dash assembly back together.

It can be several things. Te simple one is that the connector behind the cluster is loose. The other is the circut board that makes up the cluster is going bad. Try disconnecting the cluster and re connecting. If this does not work, try replacing it with a sed one from a salvage yard or from ebay.

Needs a new instrument cluster circuit board. (most likely) Or a bad fuse for the cluster itself.
