Question about Ford Escort
The shifter has a ball that it moves on and it can come loose and or be broken. under the car above the exhaust sheild under the shifter there's a rod that connects to the trans mission and moves a rod in and out the trns and there's another that just connect to the bottom of the shifter and connects to the trans mission and just connects them to gether so as you move the shifter it does'nt just pust the trans out of the way. they come disconnected and loose andfal off and rust out and the pin the makes the moving rod connect to the trans wears out and falls out too. waching the shifter from the bottom with someone moving the shifter around will show the problem and the shifter is rebuildable and you Ford dealers parts dept has already sold alot of the kits as this happens alot and on ons aot older than yours and they have changed very little over the differnt model years so the dealer will sell you just what you need. That's about an hour if your handy with tools and you can get under the car to work on it. Make sure the car is supported hard so you don't pull the car onto you as you trn the wreanchs to tighten and loosen the bolts cars are heavy if their on top of you ( I know). rebuild the shifter or just retighten all the bolts or put in the ones that fell out.
