Question about 1999 Ford Windstar

1 Answer

I have a ford winstar and the O/D light is flashing and the check transmission light is on but that only comes on once you start driving. My Break light and ABS light is on all the time. My odometer does not work and neither does my speedometer. I have had the ford dealership put in a used ABS module but they are telling me they can't get a connection when they try to program it. i am wondering if it is even the ABS module or something else. All these lights started at the same time when i was driving at the very same second.

Sounds like you need a speed sensor as well as an ABS module. it runs the speedometer, as well as inform on the wheel speed to make the ABS work, AND the transmission uses it to know when to shift.

generally do not drive it when the O/D light is flashing, it means an issue bad enough to cause serious damage to the trans.

You have an internal transmission problem . you need to scan the PCM to pull the code and pinpoint what is causing the transmission to set the light.

O/D Off light goes off and on

the overdrive is the 4th gear. considering that it may not be an issue with your computer switching gears to fourth but an issue with the transmission itself. this light could be a signal instead of and engine warning light where the engine is fine but the transmission isnt.

OVERDRIVE LIGHT FLASHING ON A 97 FORD EXPLORER,SOUNDS LIKE NOISE COMING FROM TORQUE CONVERTER ALSO.

Light flashing means a code is stored in the transmission computer.A stored code can cause high line pressure which could cause some pump noise, but most ;likely the torque converter is starting to break up.The codes will tell the story.Good luck.

2001 Ford Winstar Theft light on

When the battery was replaced it possibly set off the anti theft system for your vehicle, check your owners manual for instructions on resetting the system its usually pretty simple, also check your fuses, they could have just went out during the battery change. It should be pretty simple and quick to do. Good luck.

Common fault on FORD
Usually due to a poor connection in the YELLOW PLASTIC CONNECTOR underneath the passenger seat.

If your overdrive light is flashing and the transmission is not shifting properly, you most likely have diagnostic codes stored in the tranmission control module. These codes relate to a specific sensor/solenoid/actuator and can help in diagnosing your problem. You will need a scan tool to read these codes. You should also check your transmission fluid level to see if it is at recommended level (engine at normal operating temp). The fluid should be red in color, if it is very dark or brown/black in color and has a burnt smell to it, your transmission has internal damage and will need to overhauled.
A qualified transmission shop (Aamco, Lee Miles, Gibralter, etc.) would be your best bet.

Hope this helps.
