There will always be some steam for the first few minutes as the engine warms up after the first start of the day, but if it doesn't clear then you have a failed cylinder head gasket.

This is a major and expensive repair and there is no quick cheap fix, sorry. But leaving it unattended will simply turn a three figure repair bill into a four figure one.

Don't get sidetracked checking for a loss of power or oil in the coolant as they're not always present with a head gasket failure. You can get a cheap (often free) and quick confirmation though by asking a garage to "sniff test" the coolant. This is a simple test of a small coolant sample and instantly confirms whether the coolant has been in contact with combustion products. But as steam from a fully warmed up engine can ONLY be coming from the coolant the result is almost a foregone conclusion.

Note that as most of the labour is identical, it's worth getting the cambelt (if appropriate) and water pump replaced as a matter of course when repairing a head gasket failure. The cambelt will need to be removed during a head gasket repair anyway, and the water pump is relatively cheap and very easy to access during the job, and a failed one will cause head gasket failure.

What causes white smoke or steam to come out of the exhaust?

white smoke is an indication of coolant in the combustion chamber. I would suggest having a compression test done as there may be a gasket problem or cracked head.

Water is steaming from the exhaust while engine is running

Water coming from a exhaust is normal. The newer the car, the more emission control it has at protecting the environment and the more water you will see.

Remember that the combustion of hydrocarbon fuel produces both carbon dioxide AND water vapor as a normal part of the process. All gasoline engines produce water vapor and all water vapor condenses if the exhaust pipe is cool.

Can coolant be leaking into turbo?

Yes that can be a problem. i had this happen to my 04 Volkswagen Passat. A bunch of steam and blueish smoke came from the exhaust. The problem was that the coolant seal in the turbo was bad and it was leaking. I had to keep putting coolant into the holding tank. Had the seal fixed and that fixed my problem!

STEAM FROM EXAUST

When you first start the car in cold weather it is normal for the exhaust to emit water vapour (steam) until the engine reaches normal running temperature.

Steam from under hood at idle.

My '97 CR-V would get hot enough at idle to evaporate rainwater on the hood, but I've never had steam come out from under the hood that wasn't one of these few solutions:

1. Coolant system leak in which the coolant is somehow being leaked or displaced onto a very hot engine component such as the exhaust manifold.

2. EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) system failure in which fumes (and thus 'steam' or 'steam-like' discharge) are being introduced under the hood.

3. Exhaust leak near the engine.

4. Some (all?) vehicles cycle the A/C compressor whilst the selctor is in the DEFROST position. Is it possible that some condesate from the evaporator is spilling onto hot underhood engine parts?

5. Failure of supply hose to windwhield washer jets, usually caused by alcohol drying out the hose. Then, the washer fluid leaks on the hot engine, causing steam.

Check closely under there, I bet you find the problem.

Smoking

Are you loosing coolant? If you are, you may have a leaking head gasket. Coolant will leak into the cylinder and is turned to steam as the engine is running and comes out the exhaust as steam.
