Under acceleration, the car bogs down(like falling on it's face). One of the modules in the distributer went bad, so I replaced it and the pick up coil. Thought it might be a tooth off, so tried adj by a tooth at TDC. It made the car not start. I'm baffled! Any suggestions? The motor is rebuilt and has less than 20000 miles on it.

ues the #1 cylinder to set timing,i had the same problem, its sounds like you have a bad egr valve, that was the problem with my truck,i changed the valve and problem solved
IN your distributer under the rotor is a magnet and a pickup coil (the magnet is known as a pole piece) check your pickup coil for corrsion (green in color) and the module and also check pole piece for cracks in the magnet where the rivets hold it together. sometimes oil wicks up around the distributer shaft because of housing wear or the pieces just wear out over time.
Sounds like a timing problem to me. I would look at this first. It could be fuel related too. The old carburated engines would act like this when the accelerater pump on the carb would go bad.
Rob, it sounds like a throttle position switch to me. My 95 suburban with TBI had a similar problem and that fixed it. You may need a volt/ohm meter to rig it if you don't have a code reader that will monitor the values. I think the switch was about $25. Not sure if yours has a TBI or carburetor.
