Difficult to tell- You have ended up with a battle between the two batteries and had a huge current flowing between them, hence the bad smell. It does not mean however you have dumped minus 12 volts onto the wiring loom, and if the engine still starts then the ECU has taken it OK. You need remove the battery, and try and charge it on the bench. If it wont charge then its likely you have bent the internal lead plates and the battery will be scrap. You wont really tell what else has been damaged untill you have another good charged battery connected and can test everything. Personally I would go with a new battery just to be on the safe side. Battery and alternator checked and okay but not enough power to start car

SOUNDS LIKE A BAD GROUND ON THE ALTERNATOR OR A BAD CABLE GOING TO STARTER CHECK THESE OUT FIRST. RUN A WIRE FROM GROUND ON BATTERY TO ALTERNATOR CASE. IF PROBLEM STILL EXISTS, TAKE JUMPER CABLE FROM POSITIVE
ON THE BATTERY TO BIG POST ON STARTER WHERE POSITIVE CABLE HOOKS UP. IF THIS ALLOWS CAR TO START REPLACE POSITIVE CABLE. CORROSION CAN BE IN CABLE AND NOT VISIBLE TO THE ***** EYE.

Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly (Electrician since late 1960's)

Ground goes to the - pole. Hooking it up backwards can damage your alternator, wiring harnesses and fuse links. (Fuse link damage is a nightmare to sort out!) What you do by hooking up a battery backwards is turn your vehicle wiring harness into a giant heating element. (<-Very bad!) If you just changed the battery and then you hooked up the cables with the smoking cable result you certainly did connect the cables backwards. The ground cable... will connect to chassis and in most cases the engine body / transmission somewhere.
The positive cable will eventually connect to the starter. Follow the ground lead from the battery to the chassis or engine body connection. (metal to metal contact) Once your sure that is the ground cable; connect it to the - post of the battery AFTER connecting the positive post terminal.
If you have a newer audio system you will have lost your radio codes. We can not provide the codes for anti-theft reasons. Activation Codes must be from the car dealer or audio system retailer.
Thanks for choosing FixYa,
Kelly

Wont start, new starter, wont jump, hard wired bypassing the battery, still no juice, not even for headlights. is it a fuse???

Most likely a bad battery cable, the positive or the ground. try using a pair of battery cables and hook up to the starter a ground and the positive to the positive cable and see if you can turn it over. also remove the first inch off the battery cable on the positive and negative cables and see if the cables are corroded if they are replace them both then clean the ground connection whee the ground cable connects up to. then see if you have lights if you do it should start up. If it does not then you may have a fuse problem but need to know what I am working on to help you.

When attempting to jump start the vehicle positive battery cable heats up and smokes. What should be connected to the solenoid switch on the same post as the positive battery cable?

there should be charging leads from the alternator, and a feed wire leading to the main power/relay box just behind the solinoid. there might also be a few more leads depending on your truck. There should only be one on the other side leading to the starter. you need to replace that battery cable, a bad cable can cause symptoms similar to a dead battery

Replaced starter when battery was connected it started sparking and smoking.

Sounds like he may have pinched a wire or hooked it up backwards or has the power wire touching the starter housing.
