Sounds like you may have a blown head gasket. You should have someone do a compression test on it.

2006 Equinox. Losing water. Over heats. Is this a thermostat or water pump problem??

Depends on where the coolant is going.
If it is an external leak it could be a leaking water pump. If there are no external leaks and you are loosing coolant, it could be a blown head gasket. Especially if the engine has already overheated once.
A sticking thermostat would cause the engine to overheat and then loose coolant from the overflow tank. But not until it overheats.

you have a cylinder gasket leak I think... is it blowing bubbles into the tank? if so then the head gasket is toast or the head is cracked either way.. not fun

If you have done all that, it leaves the water pump and the fan.....how long does it take for it to overheat? Does it overheat sitting at idle in the driveway?

Overflowing from expansion tank on a 2003 chevy malibu

Have a cylinder leakage test performed to check your head gasket. It dosn't have to overheat to have a head gasket problem. A leakage test checks if looseing combustion gases to the cooling system which would presurise the system higher than normal which causes the tank to overflow.

Jeep Liberty 2005 3.7 engine running hot, need to install thermostat? fan working, full of water , water tank cap fits good.

A new thermostat would be the easiest and cheapest to do first. There is also the water pump but that normally would cause a complete overheat, probably after about 20-30 miles, water boiling out the overflow.Good luck! Greg

Hi there my subaru station wagons coolant is boiling and spewing out of the overflow tank i just got the water pump changed but not the thermostat im just wondering is it that or something else

Definitely at least try a thermostat.Seeing how you did the pump already,if it still happens after a thermostat, this is going to be an issue.Good luck! Greg How quick does it overheat? If it's pretty quick thermostat. If it's gradual and you can go like 40 miles before it overheats it could be a loose belt.

I have a 1997 BMW 328i- Left it idling in the driveway for about 10 minutes, and it over heated, and started spewing rad. fluid out of overflow tank- let it cool down, took off up the road, and it...

yes, if the water pump is bad, input hose will be hot output hose will be cool, but that also could mean a bad thermostat.

a way to see if the water pump is pumping coolant is to remove the bleed screw on the thermostat housing and see if coolant spews out.

But it overheats. may as well change out the water pump and get rid of the original plastic impellers. While you're there, replace the thermostat with a 12 degree cooler one and drill 2 3/16" holes 180 degrees from each other in the thermostat.

2.8L motors are sensitive to overheating. you can bust a head gasket this way in no time. Also warp that long cylinder head.

1999 buick centry overheating overflowing the overflow

Until you get it figured out use regular water. Replace thermostat and radiator/coolant tank caps. Thermostat regulates pressure in the motor and allows radiator to cool. Caps regulate atmosperic pressure. Either or both being bad will cause you system to siphon and fail.
