Engine revs up by itself & then down so low it dies. 86 ford taurus v4 manual

Sound like an airflow issue. But not sure if that car has a mass air flow sensor. Clean intake with carb cleaner or seafoam. I use seafoam for these issues. on throttle body unplug largest hose that has suction when running pour very slowly 6 oz seafoam into funnel connected with hose then shut car off let sit 15-30 minutes then in an open area run the car for 10 minutes revving engine to clean out the carbon. Then drive high acceleration 55+ for 10-20 miles or until smoke clears from tail pipe.

Can you tell me the location of the idle air controle sencor on a 1998 Ford Taurus?

IAC Valve or Solenoid

I would say it has to be on the throttle body

i recently had this issue with my 2001 taurus dohc engine. when you drive it seems that everything is fine. when you stop, the car will idle very low and somethimes shut off. there is a hose under the throttle body that is attached to the pcv valve. over time, this hose will collapse and eign to tear. i replace that hose (autozone for $10) and it solved my idling problem.

I have a 1998 Ford taurus. It starts fine but then dies and also when slowing down the RPM dropped and it stalls. Can start again, but it dies off pretty qickly.

need to check the idle/air control valve.the valve gets sludged with oily tarnish and moves slowly and can'y keep the car idling properly. may also want to clean the throttle plate , it too can be sludged with the same tarnish limiting the air flow.

This is not the only problem.

Do the doors also fail to lock when the vehicle starts to move?
Does it fail to shift properly and tends to stay in low gears?
Overdrive function Fails to work?

RECOMENDATION: sight unseen.

Replace speed sensor.

Engine does not know it is moving and puts the engine back to an idle when it should be stepping down the engine speed.

Hope this tip helps.

I have a 98 ford taurus that stalls when idling?

check for vacuum leaks. clean idle air bypass passages on throttle body, they control air at idle needed to maintain idle speed.

I have a vacuum leak on my 2000 ford taurus, I can bearly hear it but I know there is one because the engine idle is up a little (not normal).

try checking the pcv hose it will be either at the front of the intake going to the back valve cover or under throttle body the rubber elbows normally collapse and split check and replace it and it should be fine.

sounds like your throttle body is dirty. Also could be you idle air control valve. May need to have throttle body and injectors cleaned to fix problem.

1998 ford taurus

It may be that you need the throttle body and air bypass idle speed control valve cleaned, this is easy to to, pull of the rubber air intake hose off the engine, hold the eng. at hi idle and spray an approved throttle body spray cleaner in, use at least half the can, then lower the idle and spray until the engine stalls, disconnect the battery for 5 minutes to clear any codes and reset "idle learn" system to base line in the Power Train Control Processor. Drive a few days to reset idle learn and this should cure the issue of stall, if not you may have another part failing.
