Question about 2003 Ford Focus

Open Question

1st-PCV hose assembly and valve replaced. All other vacuum hoses traced and verified good. Mass air sensor cleaned, EGR valve tested, removed and cleaned-all tubes checked for blockage; Upper engine cleaning procedure done; Plugs and wires replaced-- engine compression good all cylinders. Problem--vibration at cold start, park or drive, almost disappears when engine warm, vibration changes when hitting speed bumps or when position of motor changes during parking. have read a mount may be issue---the TSB about road debris in the torque arm is not an issue and has been adressed. Could this actually be the hydraulic mount at right front engine(under coolant resevoir)? (no codes in system) 2.0 SOHC motor.

Try changing your PCV valve make sure the hose is clean and not full of oil. Also check the elbow end that goes to the intake they tend to collapse from oil saturation. Hope this helps.

Higher compression usually only happens when extra oil is introduced in to the cylinder.Your rings seem good due to the good compression .If there is a worn valve guide in that cylinder this would allow oil to seep into the cylinder .Also allowing for extra rocker arm movement which could be your chirping noise and cause a rough idle.The lean code sounds like something different like the is still a vacuum leak.It sounds like you know cars well ! if it's a 5.4 litre engine then i would advise u to check the hose that goes to p.c.v. valve to intake manifold. on back side of intake manifold there is a rubber elbow connector that deteriorates. get one from dealer cost is roughly 20-40 bucks. that deteriorated rubber elbow causes a vacuum leak.

Engine runs rough wont idle in drive


1. replaced the air filter
2. replaced the PCV valve
3. inspected the PCV hose and connectors (nothing wrong)
4. ran a tank of gas with fuel injector cleaner
5. tested the EGR valve by pulling the vacuum hose off the top, and blocking the hose. The idle didn't smooth out. I applied a vacuum to the EGR valve manually and the car immediately stalled which tells me that the EGR valve itself is working fine.

Rusted ERG Valve unit on 1995 F150 How to remove.


Disconnect the negative battery terminal. Disconnect the wiring connectors to the air cleaner, Mass Air Flow sensor, EGR vacuum solenoid, and DPFE sensor. Remove the air intake assembly (up to the throttle body). There are two vacuum lines from the EGR vacuum solenoid, find where they reach the EGR valve and the intake manifold, disconnect them at these points. There is a rubber hose coming from the firewall to the top of the engine, disconnect this and push it aside. Remove the nut directly below this hose (this nut holds the bracket that the DPFE and EGR vacuum solenoid are mounted to). Follow the mounting bracket around and remove the smaller nut holding it on. Have some tape ready to mark two hoses. Make a note of which hose is the "Hi" and "Ref" on the DPFE sensor and remove them. Remove the DPFE/EGR vacuum solenoid assembly. Congratulations, now you have access to the EGR valve!!

How to install speed sensor for Ford F 250 1992 truck

P0171

A lean fuel condition can be caused by:

* Low fuel pressure due to a weak pump or leaky fuel pressure regulator. (use a fuel pressure gauge to check fuel pressure at idle)

* Dirty fuel injectors. (try cleaning the injectors)

* Vacuum leaks at the intake manifold, vacuum hose connections or throttle body. (Use a vacuum gauge to check for low intake vacuum)

* Leaky EGR valve. (Check operation of EGR valve)

* Leaky PCV Valve or hose. (Check valve and hose connections)

* Dirty or defective Mass Airflow Sensor (MAF). (Try cleaning the MAF sensor wires or filament with aerosol electronics cleaner. Do NOT use anything else to clean the sensor, and do not touch the sensor wires

Cylinder Head Removal & Installation SOHC To Remove:
  1. Relieve fuel system pressure.
  2. Remove timing belt cover. Camshaft timing marks kia-03-20-7032.gif

  3. Turn crankshaft until timing mark on front housing and the arrow "2" on the camshaft pulley align.
  4. Loosen lock bolt on tensioner.
  5. Pry tensioner away from timing belt and tighten lock bolt to relieve tension on the timing belt.
  6. Remove timing belt from camshaft pulley.
  7. Disconnect battery negative cable.
  8. Remove 3 bolts that secure accelerator cable and air intake hose to cylinder head cover.
  9. Detach accelerator cable and place off to side.
  10. Remove the following;
    • Air hose
    • Air ISC air hose
    • Breather hose
    • Vacuum hose from air intake hose
  11. Disconnect mass air flow sensor electrical connector.
  12. Remove air intake hose.
  13. Remove PCV valve from cylinder head cover.
  14. Remove ISC air hose from idle speed actuator.
  15. Remove air hose from behind intake manifold.
  16. Remove 2 screws from high tension wire protectors.
  17. Detach wire loom from holder at rear of cylinder head cover.
  18. Detach vacuum tube at rear of cylinder head cover.
  19. Remove vacuum pipe. Cylinder Head Cover kia-03-20-7042.gif

  20. Remove 7 cylinder head cover bolts.
  21. Remove cylinder head cover and gasket.
  22. Disconnect 2 ignition coil electrical connectors.
  23. Disconnect 2 fuel injection electrical connectors at rear of cylinder head.
  24. Disconnect the following electrical connectors;
    • Oxygen sensor
    • Throttle position sensor
    • Idle speed actuator
    • Oil pressure switch
    • EGR vacuum solenoid valve at intake manifold
  25. Disconnect heater hose from elbow.
  26. Disconnect brake booster vacuum hose and cruise control vacuum hose from surge tank.
  27. Detach wire harness from rear of cylinder head.
  28. Disconnect purge control solenoid vacuum hose from intake manifold.
  29. Disconnect fuel hose from fuel connector assembly.
  30. Remove grounding bracket.
  31. Remove 4 bolts and intake manifold bracket.
  32. Remove starter.
  33. Detach water bypass hose from bypass pipe.
  34. Disconnect water hoses from oil cooler.
  35. Disconnect fuel hose from fuel pipe.
  36. Remove exhaust manifold heat shield.
  37. Remove exhaust flange nuts and front exhaust bracket bolt.
  38. Lower exhaust system. Cylinder head bolt loosening sequence kia-03-20-7050.gif

  39. Loosen cylinder head bolts in 3 steps in proper sequence.
  40. Remove cylinder head bolts and washers.
  41. Remove cylinder head, intake manifold and exhaust manifold as an assembly.
To Install:
  1. Install NEW cylinder head gasket.
  2. Install cylinder head, intake manifold and exhaust manifold as an assembly.
  3. Tighten cylinder head bolts in 3 steps in reverse sequence that was used during removal. Tighten bolts to 62 ft lb (84 Nm).
  4. Install front exhaust bracket bolt. Tighten bolt to 20 ft lb (27 Nm).
  5. Install NEW lower exhaust flange gasket and 3 nuts. Tighten nuts to 24 ft lb (31 Nm).
  6. Install exhaust manifold heat shield. Tighten nuts to 35 in lb (4 Nm).
  7. Connect fuel hose to pipe.
  8. Connect 2 hoses to oil cooler.
  9. Attach water bypass hose to bypass pipe.
  10. Install starter and bolts. Tighten bolts to 34 ft lb (46 Nm).
  11. Install intake manifolds bracket and 4 bolts. Tighten bolts to 32 ft lb (45 Nm).
  12. Install grounding bracket.
  13. Connect fuel hose to fuel connector assembly.
  14. Connect the following electrical connectors;
    • Oxygen sensor
    • Throttle position sensor
    • Idle speed actuator
    • Oil pressure switch
    • EGR vacuum solenoid valve at intake manifold
  15. Connect purge control solenoid vacuum hose to intake manifold.
  16. Attach wire harness from rear of cylinder head.
  17. Connect brake booster vacuum hose and cruise control vacuum hose to surge tank.
  18. Connect heater hose to elbow.
  19. Connect 2 fuel injection electrical connectors at rear of cylinder head.
  20. Connect 2 ignition coil electrical connectors.
  21. Install cylinder head cover.
  22. Install 7 cylinder head cover bolts. Tighten bolts to 60 in lb (7 Nm).
  23. Install vacuum pipe and 2 bolts at rear of cylinder head cover. Tighten bolts to 60 in lb (7 Nm).
  24. Connect vacuum tube to pipe.
  25. Connect loom holder to rear of cylinder head cover.
  26. Install 2 screws to high tension wire protectors.
  27. Install air hose to behind intake manifold.
  28. Install ISC air hose to idle speed actuator.
  29. Install PCV valve to cylinder head cover.
  30. Install air intake hose.
  31. Connect mass air flow sensor electrical connector.
  32. Install the following;
    • Air hose
    • Air ISC air hose
    • Breather hose
    • Vacuum hose from air intake hose
  33. Attach accelerator cable.
  34. Install 3 bolts that secure accelerator cable and air intake hose to cylinder head cover. Timing belt pulley timing marks kia-03-20-7035.gif

    NOTE: Timing belt pulley timing mark and timing mark must be aligned.
    Camshaft timing marks kia-03-20-7032.gif

    NOTE: The arrow at "2" on camshaft pulley must be aligned with timing mark on front housing.
  35. Install timing belt.
  36. Install timing belt cover.
  37. Pressurize fuel system.
  38. Start engine and check ignition timing.

1999 ford E150 starts and runs fine, after warm up at idle, rpms varry. will stall at stops but starts and runs fine at high idle and on highway. Trouble codes are 02s bank 1 and bank 2, both lean. also...


I had same problems w/ my 99 Chateau 5.4L. EGR-Ensure port into intake and pipe from exhaust are clear using low pressure compressed air. Pull vacuum on EGR diaphram and ensure it opens and closes smoothly. If this checks out then problem is probably in the EGR sensor (mine had both ports and hoses clogged w/ aluminum corrosion from the sensor, cleaned out hoses and lines to exhaust pipe w/ compressed air, ended up having to change the sensor). IDLE AND O2 SENSOR- Caused by vacuum leaks in the PCV line (line is plastic wrapped w/foam insulation; was cracked under the insulation; both rubber end connectors at manifold and pcv valve were softened, collapsed and leaking; allowing excess air into the manifold after the mass air flow sensor which throws off the O2 sensors. engine computer does not read O2 sensors until after engine is warmed up which is why idle is fine until then).

Check throtle position sensor behind the TBI. Run mode 4 in the computer diagnostic checks to see what codes is giving.

By the way, if any of the sensors give a code, don't spend money replacing them. They are all inter related. If one fails you will get codes for the others also. What you really need to do is above suggestion and then trace the circuits for continuity. Am assuming you know how to run ECM codes in the computer. Eliminate codes one at a time, and re-run mode 4, until all codes have been eliminated.

If code 55 is in the computer. Replace the whole TBI. After 20 years of use, they appear to corrode inside. But try the below first in the interest of saving money.

You might want to remove the TBI. Don't disturb the pre heater underneath the TBI if is stuck to it.
Take choke cleaner (Pep Boys or Autozone) Carb and Choke Cleaner in yellow can. There is an opening in the pre heater for the Air Flow Sensor, liberally spray it with the plastic little nozzle attached to the can and ensure all the gook in the passage way is clean, spray until no more junk comes out. Remove mass air flow sensor from TBI before doing this. You don't want to damage it. Spray the passage way from MAFS side also. While you have the TBI off, look at the port for EGR VALVE see if its clogged up with Carbon. Clean them out you can remove the carbon by scraping with a phillips head or bladed screwdriver. Two holes leading to the EGR Valve. They are about 1/2 inch in diameter round holes. Flush with the carb cleaner. If you really want to do ir right, remove the EGR Valve, clean it also and check to make sure its working. If NG replace it. Your EGR valve might be getting stuck due to carbon in the open position thus letting to much air into the intake manifold thus cunking out. Or the EGR has a leak. Check with vacuum pump by attaching VP to EGR. It should hold steady with 20 - 30 vacuum on the EGR. If it does not hold, throw it away and buy a new one.

You mentioned you replaced the MAFS. Remove it again and look in the element. Is it Wet or Dry?
It should be dry. Don't touch it. If its wet, then your air passages are clogged in the TBI. While you have the TBI out, spray all the vacuum fittings with the carb cleaner ensure they are free of blockage. Replace everything back carefully. Your truck should idle at 850 rpms if its standard and 700 if its auto. + or - 50 rpms. 850 is ideal. Let me know what happens after all of that.

Last but not least. Check the hose to the PCV Valve, ensure is not cracked, if damage, replace the hose and replace the PCV Valve. Ensure all vacuum hoses have no leaks and are correctly routed, especially the EGR valve one. From the manifold connect hose to center vacuum port or bottom port on the Solenoid Cut off Valve. Connect port B (Middle one to the EGR Valve.) Connect Port A (top one) to the Air Filter Canister. With the car on there should be continuity between port C and and B. You can check that with the vacuum pump. Gun the engine and see if you get a momentarily reading on the gauge if yes the port is good. If NO the Cut off Solenoid is NG. Find a working one in junk shop they are $100 bucks at the dealer. (highway robbery) If you are in PA go to Harry's U pull it. 5 bucks, each take the vacuum pump so you can check it before buying. The suffer from corrosion in the ports. Hope this solves your problem. Good Luck!
