Sounds like its time to have the ignition checked and maybe replaced,if it get to a point where you cant turn it then the repair will cost more if the key wont turn this make removing the lock harder. also a worn key will also cause this, tell you what try to spary a little wd40 into the key hole and then start and shut car off a few times then spray again and start abd shut off a few more time to see if this will help. good luck and hope this is helpful

I also have had this problem and it's when it's cold and the lock on the gear shift also controls the ignition lock and something had spilled making it "sticky"

I have a lt4200 and sometimes it will start and sometimes it won't. When key is turned it has a click under the seat. After turning key back and forth several times it will start. Help!

I need a little more information before we can help.

Does the car start only when it's dry out, or when the engine is cold?

Does this happen if your ran you're welcome engine for a while, then shut if off and tried to start it again?

My initial thought is that the started relay has a problem - or perhaps the starter itself. But I would like a little more info first.

Thanks,

Mark

When i turn the key the car will start then immediately shut off. Whats going on?

The batteries in the key don't have anything to do with its ability to start the car. Try turning the key to the run position several times before starting the car. This will get the fuel pump running and build pressure in the fuel system. If this technique works you are looking at a fuel pressure leak when the car is off. If the problem only happens when the engine is hot, you likely have a failing crankshaft position sensor. Beyond that, I can't help without the car in front of me for testing.

1995 Ford Thunderbird - Engine won't turn off

Pull the 60amp fuse in the fuse box near the battery. You'll find it. That will shut off the motor. Remove the neg ground on the battery to shut off the rest of the car and save the battery,
It sounds like the ignition lock actuator. It goes from the ignition key switch to the Yellowish ignition switch box, under the dash on the column. It pushes the ignition switch to start and pulls it back to stop and lock. If you remove the 2 hex screws on the yellowish ignition switch and let it hang down, you will see a rod sticking out of the top. It's a slider. Push the slider toward the engine and it starts. Toward the drivers seat, and it shuts off the car. Check this out.

Car keeps running after key is removed. Taking out ignition fuse shuts off engine.

This sounds like the ignition switch is sticking/hanging & allowing the engine to continue to run. When you put the fuse back in, do the ignition lights come on, if so, then that should definitly be the problem.

You can try to wiggle the key from on to off several times when you shut it off to do further testing & you may see that it will shut off that way. More proof it's the switch.

Engine starts for 3 seconds and then shuts down, radio, locks, trunk release, interior lights do not work, clock/radio display shows time but nothing from radio

Hi,
This could be a tricky one - so just go through the options methodically untill you effect a repair.

If it has an immobiliser fitted - try using another key. Sometims the chip in the key fails.

If you did anything prior to this problem - jetwashing, using a mobile phone near the steering column, serious work etc - try these areas first.

Check alternator function.
Check fuses.
Check fuel level.
Look for leaks.
Check belts condition.

It is behaving like a major electrical fault. Check the BIG fuses in the engine bay fusebox. After this - check that the ignition switch is supplying a switched live feed when in the "on" position.
It could be a faulty switch contact. Possible if you have uprated lights somewhere.

Key will not turn in ignition switch at times. ignition switch locked up.

Try spraying some WD40 or penetrating oil into the key hole.. Push the key in and out several times but dont turn the ignition yet..
Repete several times - then try to turn it..
Sometimes the tumblers get dirty and stick in there..
If this does not solve the problem - the ignition switch will need to be replaced..

Key stuck in ignition of 1996 Toyota 4Runner

This truck has a switch in the shifter assembly that tells the ignition the truck is in Park or not. If the shifter doesn't hit that switch right this can happen. Also, there is a component in the ignition (a solenoid) that allows the key to be released if the Park switch is pushed. To be sure it's one of these two things, try this.... Get the key stuck, then disconnect the battery. If the key comes right out, it's either the switch or the solenoid. Good luck!

There could be several reasons, here's a list of the most common things it could be.
  1. check the timing
  2. idle speed is to high
  3. incorrect spark plug heat range
  4. intake air vacuum leak
  5. valves sticking
  6. leaky fuel injectors
