Question about 1999 Oldsmobile Silhouette

3 Answers

I have a 1998 Silhouette. I turn it on and leave it in parking for a long time and it does not overheats. But when a drive it for about 20 minutes it starts overheating. The low coolant light comes on not to long after I turn on the car even though the radiator is full. What could be the problem?

The low coolant light may be due to the sensor, these sensors go bad often, they are located on the front side of radiator. as far as overheating the first then i would do is a block test, this is done with a fluid to test if exhaust is entering the cooling system and stopping the flow which make it overheat, if it passes this test then i would replace the thermostant and go from there, hope this helps.

Coolant sensor side of radiator below radiator cap. Push in type a square looking unit locking square clip. They get plugged or start dieing.

Now over heating check relays 3 radiator fan relays, thermostat, fans should come on at 210 low speed fan, high speed fans should come on around 220-230. good luck

2001 Oldsmobile Silhouette...Overheating, changed the thermostat, no signs of leaking, and the oil looks fine. At idle it takes 20 minutes to max the temperature gauge (red) and while driving it take

Usually the problem with no heat and overheating is low coolant, thermostat, or a faulty water pump impeller.
The radiator may not be full of liquid coolant, or the pump may not be moving the coolant thru the block.

Please have a dealership that handles GM vehicles check to see if your vehicle was involved in what the trade considers a run away transmission condition involving the automatic transmissions parking pall linkage defecting thus allowing the transmission to go into drive while the vehicle is idling in park.

Overheats ive tried the obvious solutions and it still overheats any suggestions

note if it overheats on the freeway or in city driving. If it overheats soon after you leave the house then in has to be the thermostat. If it overheats at city driving where there are lots of stop and go driving or while you are parked with the motor running, then check the radiator fan function properly. If it takes a while to overheat and tend to do it when driving on the freeway, it is a clogged/dirty radiator. If it looses coolant due to a leak, then it will also overheat. The least likely cause which don't even pertain to newer car is a retarted timing. A retarted timing causes a car to loose noticable loose of power accompanied by overheating. A retartded timing is usually common in older car where timing is adjustable by turning the distributor. Your car is exempt from this.

HERE IT IS. I HAVE A 2004 PASSAT. IT OVERHEATS WHILE DRIVEING IN ABOUT 2- 4 MINUTES TIME. WHEN I STOP OR PUT THE CAR IN NUTREAL IT COOLS BACK DOWN IN ABOUT 15 SECONDS. BUT WHEN IM IN PARK I CAN IDLE THE...

you have a 1.8 liter turbo engine correct? it is the water pump that is driven by the timing belt. 100% positive this is correct i have replaced countless water pumps for this reason. the reason it overheats while driving is becuase the splines on the water pumps plastic impeller are gone and it is just freewheeling on the pump shaft. at idle the pump spins slow enough to get the impeller to turn. very very very very common. replace water pump timing belt and tensioner.

Can be many things. Cheapest would be the thermostat. Then the waterpump, most expensively would be the timing belt. 200,400,1100.
