Question about 1965 Ford Mustang

I'm working on ford 1963 fairlane putting distribtor in at tdc # 1 does the rotor face the cap direstion of # 1 or the cylinder ? spark plug for static, the only way to get spark can't get to run and just wanted to be sure timming right and valves right I would like your advice thanks

V-8 or 6cyl? if the cap has a 1 on it, orient to that, otherwise, it really doesnt matter which one, set points at .017 (v-8) and timing mark on the balancer to the pointer. assuming v-8 (260/289 etc) firing order is 15426378

You have to put the number 1 cylinder at Top Dead Center of the compression stroke, and then you install the distributor with the rotor pointing to the #1 spark plug wire tower that is on the distributor cap.

Pull the spark plug from number 1 cylinder. You need a helper to turn the engine over by hand (using a socket on the crank pulley), or he can bump the starter over in very short bursts. Put your finger over the spark plug hole. When the piston is rising on the compression stroke, you will feel air pressure on your finger. Now look at the crank pulley and turn the engine on over until the zero degrees mark lines up on the timing pointer. Or you can stick a long straw or similar into the spark plug hole (don't let it drop into the cylinder!) to feel when the piston is at top of travel...see, you feel for pressure build up with finger (piston is rising on compression stroke), when you feel it, turn engine on over by hand until the piston is at top of travel-that is TDC of compression stroke. Now install distributor so that rotor ends up pointing directly to number 1 spark plug wire tower. Then follow firing order -as the rotor turns, it will follow the firing order around the dist. cap.
There are two top dead centers of each piston, tdc of compression stroke and tdc of exhaust stroke- to time the engine, you need tdc of compression-that is when the spark plug fires in the cylinder, so that is when you want the distributor in with the rotor pointing to #1.

Okay, you have to set the number 1 cylinder at TDC of its
compression stroke, and then drop in the distributor so the rotor is pointing to the #1 spark plug wire tower. This should start the car, then you could set the timing to spec with a timing light.

There are two TDC's of a cylinder- the compression stroke and the exhaust stroke. To find the compression stroke, take out the #1 cylinder spark plug. Put your finger over the hole. Now either turn the engine over by hand (with a socket on the crankshaft pulley-turn clockwise), OR have a helper bump the starter over in as short bursts as possible. As soon as you feel pressure on your finger- stop turning- the piston in #1 is rising on its compression stroke. Now check the timing pointer or scale by the crank pulley. Turn the engine slowly on over until the notch or mark on the crank pulley is right on the zero degrees mark on the scale. This is TDC of compression stroke-the piston is at top of travel in the cylinder. Put the distributor in so the rotor will be pointing to the #1 spark plug wire.

IF THE ROTOR POINTS TO NUM 1 CYL DOES IT ALSO POINT TO THE NUM 1 PLUG TOWER ON CAP


Don't worry about actually pointing toward # 1 cylinder, just the tab under cap that goes to # 1 spark plug wire. # 1 cylinder needs to be at TDC on compression stroke, and rotor pointing at # 1 wire tab under cap.

How to set timing to t.d.c. on 1992 302 motor


Why would you need to set TDC if you just pulled the Dist. Cap? The TDC mark is on the Harmonic Balancer, sounds like you should let a Pro help you out, Ford also places a 1 where 1 wire should be on the cap, No 1 wire is the front cylinder on the passenger side, with the crankshaft set at TDC the rotor will point to where No 1 wire should be. Replaced old distributor with new "OE" distributor, but failed to mark old rotor position. I know to find #1 cylinder - do I aim rotor at #1 position when TDC is located?


you need to make sure you are on the compression stroke when the piston comes up to TDC for cylinder #1. Most times you can just feel the compression with your finger over the spark plug hole. After determining the #1 cylinder is at TDC on the compression stroke, note the position of the #1 spark plug lead on the distributor cap. You will need to line up the rotor with the terminal inside the cap for #1.

1969 buick electra 430 engine do not no were #1 is on distributor cap and when piston is at TDC should it be pointed at #1 on the compression stroke.

Just replaced engine in my 97 its a vortec brought it to tdc put in distributar it turns over and tries to start but wont i turn it just a little it acts better but i cant move it far enough


take the spark plug out of the #1 cylinder and turn the engine by hand until the piston is at the top dead center of its stroke (put a screw driver in the hole and you should be able to tell when its all the way up). now pull the cap off the distributer the rotor should be pointing at the #1 cylinder wire. if not then the distributer is in the wrong possition. remove the distributer and point the rotor in the correct possition(#1 cylinder) and place the distributer back in.also if this is a used engine replace the cap,rotor plugs and wires.the truck should start. Hope this helps you out.

If # 1 cylinder is on compression stroke and at TDC, the ignition rotor should be pointing at the tab inside cap for # 1 spark plug wire.

it sounds like you are 180 out on the distributor try pulling it out and turning the rotor to the opposite side and putting it back in. the #1 cylinder will hit tdc twice for every time it fires the plug you are probably hitting it on the wrong tdc stroke.
