Question about 1997 Chevrolet Cavalier

2 Answers

1997 Chevy Cavalier. 2.2 motor, auto trans. Fuel pump turns on with key, has spark while cranking the engine, but won't start. "theft system" light on. Had dealer describe procedure to disable passlock system, but still no luck. My key DOES NOT have a transponder chip, so that's not the problem. I'm pretty knowledgable and do all my own maintenance and repairs, but I've never had this problem before and I'm at a loss! Thanks!

I replaced the timing belt about 10K miles ago. Car ran just fine. Went outside one morning and just wouldn't start. Noticed "theft system" light was on.

If the theft system light is on, you must put key in ignition, ( do not start) leave in the ON position for EXACTLY 10 minutes. As SOON as the light shuts off, (in exactly the 10 minute period) Then IMMEDIATELY start the car.
This will work and it will also reset the computer.
This is very common problem with GM cars. It's due to the passlock 2 system.

Check the fuel pressure at injectors line, check injectors, with stethoscope, and check light, to exclude fuel pump, fuel filter and injectors. Might be a timing belt problem to. To loose or a teeth jump.

To be able to start your car, you must stop flashing the anti theft light. In some cases locking up your car and unlocking again the driver side door with the key might work. You can try to turn the ignition key, in on position, but do not crank and wait at least 10 minutes and this might work. If this will not work too, then check your car at GM service department.
    Good Luck

You should hear the fuel pump run momentarily when the key is in the Run position. Ensure the engine has a good spark by removing one of spark plug boots. Stick a phillips screwdriver in the boot, and hold the handle of the screwdriver, and allow the shaft near ground. (motor works best) Have someone crank the engine and look for a good blue spark arch from the screwdriver and engine. If your getting good spark, then check the fuel pressure on the fuel injection rail.

Chamged theif light will not go off on a 97 chevy calavier z24

Ok make sure battery is charge or leave a charger hooked up on low charge to maintain battery wile doing this process ,
turn key to on position leave for 10 minutes ,then turn to off and repeat a total of three times this will reset theft mode to normal and relearn key . Don't crank engine during third process or you will have to start over . It takes about thirty to thirty-five minutes to complete .if this doesn't work you will have to get system checked

I changed engines from a 1996 chevy cavalier to a 1997 cavalier,i don't get any gas or fire won't start

These cars were made with an anti theft security system. If you swapped motors, you may have interupted that system causing the the security to turn off the ijector fuel. Just a thought.

check to see if the security light or anti theft light flashes. if that is the case, sounds like the bypass for the remote starter may be causeing the no start by tripping the anti theft system. Remove remote starter and bypass system and join any cut wires back together that may be cut for remote starter. Try starting, if theft light still flashes leave key in the on position after attempted start for 15 minutes till theft light goes solid, turn off and try again. Repeat process for three times to re-learn factory theft system in vehicle. If problem still persists, then take to your local dealer to reprogram factory theft module in the cluster.

The theft system is set on my 1997 chevy cavalier help

If it is a pass lock system just turn the key to the on position, but do not start the engine and wait 10 minutes until the light stops flashing. Then turn it off and restart it. It should go away. If the light is not flashing in the first place then I don't know.
