The Z71 typically comes with the auto 4wd transfer case (cannot remember the GM number). This requires AutoTrak II, which is available at a GM dealer. Do not use any other fluid in this transfer case! The previous post was correct in the location of the two plugs, but not on the fluid (the other types of transfer cases by GM use ATF). The transfer case is located under the truck right under the cab. There is a small skid plate under it, and a large driveshaft leaves the rear end of the case heading to the rear differential (axle). If you have the manual or electronic w/o auto 4WD transfer case, you can use Dexron III, but Dexron VI is a better fluid that is also now available at your local auto parts store. Again, if you have the AUTO 4WD button in the dash, use the AutoTrak II fluid from the dealer.

YES THEY COME IN METRIC SIZES. AND,MOST GM PRODUCTS ARE ALL METRIC THESE DAYS. GET A MERTIC SET. YOU WILL ALWAYS USE THEM AGAIN. TOOLS ARE A GOOD INVESTMENT.

Go buy the chevrolet shop manual for the truck. Its worth every penny in the long run and will save you thousands by not going to the dealer for everything, because they consult the shop manual. make sure your tranny doesnt share fluid with your transfer case, you could over fill or underfill it easily.

Disconnect the ground cable from the negative battery terminal, by using a wrench to loosen the retaining bolt and pulling the clamp off the terminal.
Raise the vehicle and support with jack stands placed underneath the frame.
Drain the transfer case. Locate the drain plug near the bottom of the transfer case. Place a waste oil collection pan underneath the plug and use a socket to remove it. Once all the fluid has drained out, reinstall the plug.
Remove the bolts that connect the rear driveshaft to the rear axle yoke using a socket. Lower the driveshaft, and slide it backward underneath the rear axle to disengage it from the transfer case. Remove it from the vehicle.
Remove the bolts that connect the front driveshaft to the front axle yoke using a socket. Lower the driveshaft, and slide it forward underneath the front axle to disengage it from the transfer case. Remove the driveshaft from the vehicle.
Label and disconnect the electrical wires and vacuum lines connected to the transfer case. Use masking tape and a marker.
Remove the transfer case shifter rod. Using needle-nose pliers, remove the clip that connects the shifter rod to the transfer case. Slide the rod away from the transfer case.
Position a floor jack underneath the transfer case. Raise it enough to take the weight of the transfer case off the transmission.
Remove the bolts that connect the transfer case to the transmission using a socket or wrench.
Slide the transfer case rearward to disengage it from the transfer case. Lower the floor jack, and remove the transfer case from the vehicle.

Park your car in a safe place and make sure you have enough space to work around it.Raise the vehicle using a floor jack and safely support it on two jack stands. If you have a four-wheel drive model, the transfer case is located center-left of the car. Lift the left side and position the jack stands near the front and rear wheels. If you have an all-wheel drive model, the transfer case is an integral part of the transmission. Lift the front of the vehicle.Working from underneath the vehicle, locate the drain plug at the bottom of the transfer case and place a drain pan underneath. Using a wrench or ratchet, remove the drain plug. After all the transfer case fluid has been drained, reinstall the drain plug. Do not over-tighten the plug to avoid damaging the threads. Remove the drain pan from underneath the vehicle.Locate the filler plug on the side of the transfer case. Clean the filler plug and the area around it using a shop rag; this avoids contaminating the new transfer case fluid. Using a wrench or ratchet and socket, remove the filler plug. Add the new fluid to the case using a small funnel. Add oil until it reaches the bottom of the filler hole, then reinstall the filler plug but do not over tighten it.Lower the vehicle.
